Florida Medical Center Offers New Treatment Option for Patients with Severe Depression

For patients experiencing emotional and psychological symptoms, such as severe depression, severe mania or catatonia, Florida Medical Center will now provide electro convulsive therapy (ECT) as an additional treatment option.  ECT can be favorable in the treatment of psychiatric symptoms that have otherwise been unresponsive to traditional psychiatric medications.

“Adding electro convulsive therapy to our behavioral health services allows us to provide a new option to patients who may have been struggling with severe symptoms of depression for years,” said Trey Abshier, CEO at Florida Medical Center.  “We are committed to both the physical and mental well-being of all of our patients.”

Florida Medical Center’s behavioral health services address a variety of acute or chronic behavioral health disorders, including dual diagnosis, emotional disorder combined with chemical dependence, providing a structured, nurturing environment with close observation and treatment in the adult and geriatric psychiatric units. The newly added ECT suite is designed and equipped for comfortable patient care, detailed information and education prior to treatment, treatment on either an inpatient or outpatient basis, as well as 24 hour admissions.

“The behavioral health services department has a team of qualified clinicians that are trained in providing state of the art patient centered psychiatric care. Having this service available will help meet the needs of patients who have not shown improvement with traditional treatment modalities,” said Miguel Fernandez, LCSW, CADC director of behavioral health services.

With this technology, Florida Medical Center offers new hope to those suffering from depression that affects millions of people in the United States.
