Sunny Isles Beach Foundation launches its first project It’s Written On The Wall!

You may have noticed the wall across from the Norman S. Edelcup SIB K-8 School in Sunny Isles Beach has been repainted white with the logo of the Sunny Isles Beach Foundation: “incite, inspire, innovate..” You may have wondered, “What is happening here?”

This is the first event of its kind in the City: a curated ArtWall and Mural project sponsored by the Foundation. Students at Edelcup Elementary, the Alonzo & Tracy Mourning Senior High School, and the “I Have a Dream” Foundation sponsored 7th grade class were invited to participate in the 2015 Youth Art Competition and Mural. The theme will be “Reflections: Our Coast, Our Home.” Students will be asked to produce artworks and ideas that reflect on environmental conservation, water recreation, beach restoration, and the use of local waters in their communities as inspiration for this project.

Our young, aspiring artists (and we hope there are many!) will compete to have their original works selected by a jury. The selected original works will then be transposed by a professional muralist into a sectional mural design on the seven-hundredfoot- long public wall with the unveiling of the wall some time in November, 2015.

This project is part of the Foundation’s mission to creatively use public spaces and to bring the community together in shared cultural experiences. Originally, conceived in 2013, by then Mayor Edelcup and fully endorsed by the City Commission, the Foundation as a private non-profit corporation intends to create permanent charitable endowment to promote quality of life in the city. “In keeping with the aim of being a world class city, our goal is to bring extraordinary cultural programs and events to the Sunny Isles Beach community that will compliment current cultural events presently produced by the City of Sunny Isles Beach,” says founder and Chairman of the Board, Norman Edelcup.

With the permission of our City Commission, you can watch for our March Music Month events, coming up around the city’s already popular Beethoven on the Beach concert.

Special thanks to Lynx Construction Management for donating their time and expertise to prime the ArtWall for the competition. Thanks also go to Ranaan Katz for donating use of his wall for this effort. We are looking forward to support from other local businesses in our community.
