[dropcap]F[/dropcap]ans of Miami’s Ultra Music Festival heard the good news on January 7th, announcing the first wave of the lineup for the festival’s 2015 event. What occurred today, though, they may not have heard about: Ultra co-founder Alejandro Omes, passed away today at the young age of 43. According to reports, he passed away at approximately 10:30 p.m. Monday night. The cause of death is unknown.

Ultra co-founder Alejandro Omes

Friends and supporters of Omes, a Miami nightlife fixture, poured their condolences out upon social media with a number of grief filled tweets and posts. For such a positive event, the beginning of this year’s festival promotion has started on an unfortunate note.

Omes started Ultra Fest in 1999 with partner Russell Faibisch and it grew to become one of the largest electronic music events in the world, with other Ultra Festivals springing up from Ibiza, Spain to Hvar, Croatia. Although his relationship with the festival soured over the years, he held onto his title as co-founder and continued promoting events around Miami.

This sad development has ironic timing. Hype for this year’s Ultra has already started, with a beautifully shot video being posted last week showcasing artists featured on the bill. So far, the event will include hard hitting EDM acts such as dance music legend Carl Cox, freaky South African rappers Die Antwoord, and house/trance star David Guetta.
