South Miami K-8 Center  is a regional winner in the Learning.com 2016 Code-a-Thon competition. The national ed tech company sponsored the competition to introduce coding skills to elementary and middle school students. South Miami K-8 Center will receive a one-year subscription to EasyTech and EasyCode Premium, the company’s digital literacy and coding curriculum for grades K-8.

“We are thrilled to congratulate South Miami K-8 Center as one of the winners of our first Code-a-Thon and all of the students and teachers across the country who enthusiastically accepted this coding challenge,” said Learning.com CEO Keith Oelrich. “It is vital that today’s students begin to develop coding proficiency and the Code-a-Thon offered a fun way to engage students and teachers with the concepts of coding. We’re excited by the overwhelming response this year’s event received and we look forward to many more to come.”

To participate in Code-a-Thon, schools registered to receive free access to EasyTech and EasyCode Basic. After logging in, students then coded their way through a number of challenges – each with increasing levels of difficulty – earning points for every successfully completed challenge. The school with the highest average number of points per student was chosen as the winner. Throughout the Code-a-Thon, schools used #codeathon2016 on social media to share their progress and interact with other participants.

The Code-a-Thon originated as part of Learning.com’s pledge to support Computer Science for All (CSforAll), President Obama’s call-to-action for more computer science opportunities for all K-12 schools. CSforAll empowers K-12 students to learn computer science and develop the computational thinking skills necessary to spur the transition from consumer to creator in today’s digital economy. The Code-a-Thon was highlighted as an innovative initiative that helps make computer science accessible to all students at the CSforALL Summit hosted by the White House on Sept. 14, 2016.
