Zoo Miami, 12400 SW 152 St., recently announced that it has been selected as one of the winners in the USA Today 10 Best Readers’ Choice travel award contest.
After being nominated as one of 20 finalists by an expert panel that includes editors from USA Today and 10Best.com, along with relevant travel experts, Zoo Miami was selected by a digital vote that allowed the public to vote online for one nominee per category, per day over a period of four weeks.
10Best.com provides users with original, unbiased, and experiential travel content of top attractions, things to see and do, and restaurants for top destinations in the U.S. and around the world. The core of the site’s uniqueness is its team of local travel experts: a well-traveled and well-educated group who are not only experts in their fields — and their cities — but discriminating in their tastes.
10Best.com, averages 5 million visitors per month and was acquired by USA Today in January 2013.
Zoo Miami is the oldest and largest zoological garden in the state of Florida and the only zoo located in a sub-tropical climate in the continental U.S. It has approximately 330 developed acres which sit on a 740-acre footprint of land and is home to approximately 3,000 animals representing more than 500 species from around the world.
In addition to its extensive animal collection, Zoo Miami is classified as a botanical garden and features over 1,000 species of trees, palms and other plants to help provide natural environments for all of the zoo’s residents.
With nearly 1 million annual visitors, Zoo Miami is part of the Miami-Dade County Parks Recreation and Open Spaces (PROS) Department and iparticipates in a wide variety of global conservation initiatives for dozens of projects on six continents.
Zoo Miami is open every day of the year from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the last ticket being sold at 4 p.m. Admission is $22.95 plus tax per adult and $18.95 plus tax per child ages 3-12. Children under age 3 are free. Zoo memberships offer free access year round and can be purchased online at www.zoomiami.org.
