Maria Alejandra Castaño: Passionate Leadership at Loretta & the Butcher

Coconut Grove, Miami’s oldest neighborhood, has quietly evolved into one of South Florida’s most successful business communities – and it’s no accident. With its blend of charm, strategy, and community, the Grove offers a blueprint for how local economies can thrive.

At the heart of its success is a strong sense of community. And at the heart of the Grove’s bustling downtown district are independent businesses, like Loretta and the Butcher on Commodore Plaza, with Maria Alejandra Castaño at the helm.

By cultivating a loyal customer base that values authenticity and true connection, Castaño’s quaint bistro tucked between the busy shops and other businesses on Commodore Plaza has fast become a beloved neighborhood staple.

“Since the very beginning, we wanted to be more than just a restaurant. We’ve built real relationships with our guests and with other businesses in the Grove. We know their names, their favorite dishes, and make each visit one that feels like they’re home.” The loyalty and warmth of their customers continue to fuel the restaurant’s growth.

    Culinary Passion

With a passion for Argentine cuisine and making guests feel at home, she’s created a fine restaurant that’s a one way ticket to Buenos Aires. Her journey proves that with the right ingredients, vision, and boldness, anything is possible.

Beyond perfecting beef, Loretta & the Butcher honors an iconic Argentine culinary tradition, led by the passionate and determined Castaño. As a powerful woman in a male-dominated industry, she runs a restaurant that embodies authenticity, quality, and community in the deepest sense.

Castaño’s love for food began in her childhood, growing up in Colombia where meals are a symbol of unity and tradition. “Since I was a little girl, cooking has been my passion and my way of expression. And I’ve always been fascinated by how the right dish can tell a story, awaken emotions, and bring people together.”

Her admiration for Argentina’s beloved cuisine eventually led her to acquire Loretta & the Butcher, where she brings the essence of la parrilla (Argentine grill) to the Grove. With respect for each cut of meat and a dedication to using the highest quality ingredients, she ensures each dish represents the true flavors of Argentina.

“Loretta & the Butcher is more than a restaurant; it’s a total experience. We want patrons to feel transported to Argentina through flavors, aromas, and the welcoming warmth of the atmosphere.”

What Makes an Argentine Grill Great?

A true Argentine “parrilla” is more than just grilled meats, it’s a whole ritual. “Everything starts with the highest quality cuts, cooked over fire with patience. Coarse salt is all the seasoning that’s needed to highlight the succulent meat’s true flavor.”

But beyond the food, it’s about connection. “A true parrilla is meant to be shared with friends and family, with melted provoleta, a glass of wine, and, of course, chimichurri to add the final touch. It’s about friends and family gathering around the grill, living in the moment filled with passion.” At Loretta & the Butcher, every meal is designed to capture that spirit.

    Breaking Restaurant Industry Barriers

Running a restaurant as a woman comes with some challenges, but Castaño has always met them head-on with the utmost confidence and perseverance. “The biggest challenge has been breaking biases and stereotypes in a typically male-dominated industry, and proving that female leadership is equally strong and strategic.”

Balancing her roles as a businesswoman, mother, and wife is no easy feat, but Castaño has cultivated a restaurant known for both excellence and inclusivity. “Seeing Loretta and the Butcher grow, curating a unique experience, and being passionate about leadership shows that you can balance those three crucial roles without giving up your dreams.”

    The True Taste of Argentina

Loretta & the Butcher’s menu is specifically curated to immerse their guests in the authentic Argentine flavor. Signature dishes include bife de chorizo, ojo de bife, and entraña, all grilled to perfection.

Another standout is Arroz del Gaucho, a bold, comforting dish that echoes Argentina’s rich culinary traditions, alongside their world-famous empanadas, crispy on the outside, boasting a variety of fillings, and bursting with flavor inside. Each dish transports guests straight to Buenos Aires, one bite at a time.

What’s Next for Loretta & the Butcher?

Looking ahead, Maria Alejandra envisions expanding Loretta & the Butcher while maintaining its warm and welcoming atmosphere. “We’re exploring new opportunities to bring our delicious dishes to even more people, all without losing the signature warmth that defines us.”

Her journey is far from over, and that passion burns bright, strong as ever. “Oh, I believe the best is yet to come,” she says.

The Children’s Trust Launches New Rewards Program for Miami-Dade Parents

New incentive system rewards parenting workshop participation
    with access to community events.

The Children’s Trust is excited to announce the launch of the Parent Club Pass rewards program, a new initiative designed to recognize and celebrate parents who actively participate in parenting workshops and events to strengthen their parenting skills. This first-of-its-kind rewards program encourages families to engage more and earn more – from exclusive giveaways and raffle entries to special perks, and to make learning and community-building a consistent part of their parenting journey.

For some parents, raising children can be an isolating experience. That’s why, in 2019, The Children’s Trust of Miami-Dade launched the Parent Club. This successful initiative brings parents fun and educational workshops at no charge, while also offering a welcoming community, free child care during the sessions, snacks, and raffle prizes.
Starting this month, attendees who complete three unique in-person workshops will receive non-transferable passes to local community events, with the opportunity to earn up to four passes per participant, per year. Opportunities include sporting or theater events, concert or movie passes, or family packs to parks or museums, among others. The intent is to further encourage family engagement through fun activities.

The Children’s Trust Parent Club offers free 60-minute workshops in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole, scheduled at convenient times and locations throughout Miami-Dade County. Available in person (with free child care for kids aged 3-12, snacks, and raffle entry) or virtually, these sessions support parents of children at every developmental stage.

“Parenting is the most important job anyone can have, yet it’s the one we’re least trained for,” said James R. Haj, President & CEO of The Children’s Trust. “The Parent Club Pass is our way of recognizing parents’ commitment to learning while connecting families to enriching experiences in our community.”

Participants earn one credit for each different workshop they attend (one credit per topic). After attending three workshops and completing the survey, they qualify for a Parent Club Pass. Each month, The Children’s Trust will notify eligible participants via email or text with redemption instructions. Families must reside in Miami-Dade County to qualify.

The Parent Club is made possible through partnerships with Be Strong International, FIU Center for Children and Families, University of Miami Health System, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), and Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS). Since its inception, the program has empowered thousands of parents/caregivers to develop practical skills to raise confident, capable children.

“Our families tell us that they come for the parenting tips—but they stay for the community,” said Haj. “This rewards program is a small way to say thank you and to keep parents connected and inspired.”

FIU puts students to the test at 10th annual disaster response exercise

FIU graduate students participate in annual disaster field exercise at FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus.

Florida International University kicked off its annual disaster field exercise today, marking the 10th anniversary of a program that has prepared hundreds of students for careers in disaster management.

“Disasters are devastating and unpredictable, so it’s critical that we have a trained workforce ready to meet the immediate and long-term needs of those affected,” said Javier I. Marques, executive director of FIU’s Academy for International Disaster Preparedness (AIDP), senior vice president for the Division of Operations and Safety and FIU Chief of Staff. “I am proud that for 10 years, FIU has offered a program that gives students practical training that primes them for successful careers in disaster management.”

To bring the exercise to life, emergency response agencies, health providers, and national defense and security organizations teamed up with FIU’s AIDP, part of the Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work, to offer equipment and resources — such as helicopters and mobile command units — to simulate a real-life disaster response operation. More than 250 volunteers, from FIU and participating agencies, are roleplaying as response coordinators and support staff.

FIU is staging the exercise to test students on their ability to lead response and recovery efforts. This year, about 60 students are responding to the needs of two fictional countries devastated by a Category 5 hurricane. They will collaborate with different agencies on rapid damage assessment, shelter and site planning, food aid distribution, and other important relief efforts.

“This course offers a chance to put everything we’ve learned over the past year into practice. Learning in emergency management comes not only from theory but from applying knowledge in settings that reflect the complexity and urgency of real-world crises,” said Emily Garland, student and exercise participant. “I’m hoping to gain hands-on experience that deepens my confidence and sharpens my ability to respond effectively in the field.”

New this year is the participation of Food Network personality and restaurateur Guy Fieri’s foundation. The Guy Fieri Foundation has served over 200,000 meals during natural disasters, including the recent California fires, through his mobile food trailer. The foundation worked with students from FIU’s Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management to prepare meals and feed field exercise participants.

“The Guy Fieri Foundation is proud to partner with FIU in helping to ready the next generation for whenever disaster strikes. Supporting current and future first responders is critical to the Foundation’s mission and together, we’re all-in whenever the need arises,” said Fieri.

Incorporating the foundation adds another layer to the exercise, giving hospitality students hands-on experience with managing meal delivery during a disaster response operation – skills that are part of a new disaster dining field kitchen operations certification program soon to be offered through the Chaplin School’s Executive Education program. Students will train to plan, stage, procure, cook, and distribute meals in disaster zones with speed and precision.

“We know that hospitality is always an important part of any experience, but especially when people suffer a disaster, they seek shelter and a hot plate of food,” said Michael Cheng, dean of the Chaplin School. “We are so excited to be able to help spread this shared passion of hospitality in this unique way.”

Representatives from participating agencies and organizations include City of Miami Fire Rescue/Emergency Management, City of Miami, City of Miami Beach, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR), Miami-Dade County Department of Emergency Management, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Southern Command, DHL, Global Empowerment Mission (GEM), Seminole Department of Emergency Management, Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM), Baptist of South Florida, and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

“It’s inspiring to see how people from so many different backgrounds come together for this experience,” said Robert Jorge, senior director for AIDP. “Collaboration is essential to disaster management and one of the pillars FIU stands behind. I’m proud of our students and of FIU for supporting such an innovative and important program.”

The Mysterious Queen Jane of Miami Beach

    Jane signing her book

Earlier this spring, my play Greetings from Paradise opened to a full house at the Miracle Theatre, launching Coral Gables’ 100th anniversary with a five-night run. It was a labor of love and a tribute to the dreamers of early South Florida, George Merrick and Carl Fisher, who transformed palmetto scrub and swampland into the paradise we know today.

One of the joys of writing the play was researching our region’s past. Many assume South Florida lacks the rich, layered history of older cities. What I found was the opposite: a cast of bold, eccentric, and often reckless pioneers who dared to build cities from coral and sand.

But one detail bothered me: Jane Fisher’s age when she married Carl Fisher. In my play, I introduced Jane as the famed original bathing beauty and unofficial queen of Miami Beach.

In her 1947 memoir Fabulous Hoosier, Jane recounts how, at age 15, she was swept off her feet—braided pigtails and all—by the 35-year-old entrepreneur who would become the father of Miami Beach. He married her quickly, she claims, so she could travel with him on business. Jane proudly repeats her age twice in the book, painting their relationship as a scandalous whirlwind romance.

The only problem? It isn’t true.

Several obituaries from 1968 listed her age at death as 74—matching the 15-year-old bride narrative. But something felt off. I searched for a birth certificate under “Jane Watts,” her maiden name, and came up empty.

Then I found the 1900 U.S. Census. Listed was a “Jenny Watts,” age 15, born March 1885, living in Clermont, Indiana with her parents James Buchanan Watts and Ada, and a brother named Roy. If accurate, Jane would have been 24 when she married Carl in 1909—not 15.

Could it be a different Jane? Maybe. But then I found the 1910 census taken one year after their wedding. It lists her as 25 years old and married to Carl Fisher. Then came the clincher: Jane’s own passport application from February 15, 1919. In her own handwriting, she states her birthdate as March 29, 1885.

    There it was. The truth.

So why the 15-year-old bride story? Perhaps it added flair to her memoir—or helped her shave a decade off her age for social cachet. After divorcing Carl in 1926, Jane married (and divorced) three more times. Maybe the fib stuck because it served her well.

    Jane’s Gravestone

But the mystery didn’t stop at her age. Her name, too, was confusing—Watts, Welch, even “Jennie Millslagle.” Eventually, the pieces came together. Jane was born Jennie Millslagle in 1885 to George and Ada (Jones) Millslagle. When George went to jail for theft, Ada divorced and married J.B. Watts, who raised Jane. Later, Ada married a third time to George Welch. Journalists likely muddled the last names, especially since Ada visited her daughter in Miami Beach well into Jane’s fame. After her fourth and final divorce, Jane petitioned to get the surname Fisher back, even though by then, Carl was married to someone else.

To some, this age discrepancy may seem trivial. But as a journalist, facts matter. They mattered in Greetings from Paradise too. One of the central characters, Frank Harris, is a New York journalist who arrives in Florida in 1925 to expose the frenzy behind the land boom. He gets swept up in the spectacle, only to find his way back to the truth when the bubble bursts.

In researching the play, I encountered inaccuracies in non-fiction books about the era, sited and repeated again and again.

When one reporter questioned her about her age, Jane replied, “I never tell anyone my age. I was 39 last year and this year I’m 38, and if I live long enough, I’ll be an infant when I die.” In the end, Jane did manage to shave two years off her age. Her tombstone at Woodlawn Cemetery in Miami reads simply: Jane Fisher, 1887–1968.

It’s a small correction in the sweep of history—but a reminder of why truth matters. In an age flooded with misinformation, it’s more important than ever to challenge what we’re told. Because when myths go unchallenged, they become fact. And that has far greater consequences than just finding out Carl Fisher didn’t actually seduce a pigtailed schoolgirl after all. Or, maybe he thought he had?

ZOO MIAMI GALAPAGOS TORTOISE CELEBRATES BEING A FATHER FOR THE FIRST TIME AT AGE 135!

    Ron Magill/Zoo Miami

On this Father’s Day, June 15th, Zoo Miami’s oldest animal will be celebrating his 135th birthday!  His name is “Goliath,” and he is a Galapagos tortoise that weighs 517 pounds!  Up until this prior week, he had not fathered any offspring.  That changed when after 128 days of incubation, one egg out of a clutch of 8 that was laid January 27th, successfully hatched on June 4th!  Not only is this the first offspring for Goliath, but it is also the first time in the history of Zoo Miami that a Galapagos tortoise has hatched, making this an historic event on multiple levels!

Goliath’s official record has him hatching out on the island of Santa Cruz in the Galapagos on June 15th, 1890.  He arrived at the Bronx Zoo on July 23rd, 1929, and finally came to Zoo Miami on July 30th, 1981.  During his time at Zoo Miami, he had bred with several different females but had never successfully sired an offspring.

The mother is “Sweet Pea,” and she arrived at the Crandon Park Zoo on Key Biscayne, Florida as an adult in 1960, indicating that she is between 85-100 years old.

An application has been made to the Guinness Book of World Records to officially recognize Goliath as “The Oldest First-Time Father in History!”  Considering the age of Sweet Pea, their combined age is over 200 and they may also qualify as “The Oldest First-Time Parents in History!”

Both Goliath and Sweet Pea are doing well on their public habitat and are not aware of their newly hatched offspring.  In the wild, hatchlings are on their own from the moment they emerge from the egg and the parents have no further connection to them.  The hatchling appears to be healthy and has been removed from the incubator and placed in a separate enclosure where it is active and full of energy!

This Father’s Day will be extra special at Zoo Miami as we not only celebrate Goliath’s birthday, but we will also be celebrating how the stars have finally aligned to make him a father for the first time in his amazing 135-year life!  He is an inspiration to never give up hope!
