The Miami Pitmasters BBQ Competition sizzled this past weekend at Maurice A. Ferré Park in downtown Miami, drawing barbecue enthusiasts and competitors from across the state to showcase their grilling skills. With a tantalizing array of smoked meats perfuming the air, the event featured over 28 teams battling it out in a heated contest judged by a panel of over 30 trained and certified barbecue experts.
The competition required each team to turn in entries from four categories of barbecued meats: chicken, pork ribs, pork, and beef brisket. The diversity of barbecue styles presented at the competition provided a comprehensive taste of Florida’s best BBQ techniques and flavors, drawing a large crowd of spectators eager to witness the mastery of grilling in real time.
Among the standout performers was Bishop’s Pitmaster BBQ, a Miami-based team participating in their first Florida BBQ Association competition. Despite being newcomers to the circuit and one of the few local entrants, Bishop’s Pitmaster BBQ made a remarkable impression, securing top placements in several categories. They finished 5th in Pork, 4th in Brisket, and an impressive 3rd in Ribs. Their success highlighted not only their culinary prowess but also their potential as rising stars in the competitive BBQ scene.
The event was not just a competition but a celebration of barbecue culture, with teams spending hours meticulously preparing and smoking their meats to achieve the perfect balance of flavor, tenderness, and presentation. The judges, all certified by the Florida BBQ Association, evaluated each entry based on these criteria, ensuring a fair and expert assessment of the culinary skills on display.
Moreover, the Miami Pitmasters BBQ Competition served a noble cause, benefiting VENTURE Miami, a scholarship fund designed to assist City of Miami college students with gap funding for higher education. This added layer of community support highlighted the event’s commitment to giving back and fostering the next generation of leaders by easing their educational journeys.
The competition fostered a sense of community and shared passion for barbecue, providing a platform for both seasoned pitmasters and novices to learn from each other, exchange techniques, and push the boundaries of traditional barbecue. It underscored the growing popularity of BBQ competitions in Florida and the high level of expertise and dedication these competitions demand.
For those interested in sampling Bishop’s Pitmaster BBQ’s award-winning fare, they can be found on Instagram, TikTok, and their website at bishopspitmasterbbq.com. They offer Small Batch, Craft BBQ Made to Order, which can be delivered directly to your front door—a convenient way to enjoy top-quality barbecue without leaving home.
As the smoke clears, the impact of the Miami Pitmasters BBQ Competition lingers, promising an even bigger and more flavorful event next year, all while supporting an important local cause.

M-DCPS SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES AGENDA ITEM PROFFERED BY LUISA SANTOS PROMOTING THE “2025 MIAMI NACAC NATIONAL COLLEGE FAIR” IN MARCH OF 2025

At the School Board Meeting of April 17, 2024, School Board Member Luisa Santos proffered agenda item H-11, joining in promoting the College Fair and authorizing the Superintendent of Schools to encourage all Miami-Dade County Public Schools to participate in the “2025 Miami NACAC National College Fair” in March of 2025.

Continuing the legacy left behind by former School Board Chair Ms. Perla Tabares Hantman, who proposed a similar item annually during her tenure, and in alignment with the Post Secondary Success Framework proposed by School Board Member Luisa Santos at the Board Meeting of August 18, 2021, via agenda item H-10, this item recommends that the School Board join in promoting the College Fair across Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) hosts National College Fairs across the country. The 2024 Miami NACAC National College Fair provided students, parents, and community members the opportunity to meet with representatives from over 200 colleges around the world. Next year, the 2025 Miami National College Fair will further serve as a bridge between the Miami-Dade community and higher education opportunities.

The 2025 Miami National College Fair will host a variety of information sessions, led by professionals from the college admissions office, financial aid departments, and advisors who are there to support students and their parents navigate post-secondary planning. This event is traditionally held in March every year in Miami.

SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER ROBERTO J. ALONSO HOSTS A FAMILY NIGHT EVENT AT TWIN LAKES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

On Monday, April 22, 2024, School Board Member Roberto J. Alonso, District 4, welcomed students and families from Twin Lakes Elementary School to a vibrant and engaging family night. The event saw a remarkable turnout as parents, families, and school community came together to celebrate the talents and achievements of their students.

The joyful evening featured a wide array of terrific student performances, including fascinating music renditions, lively dances, and other artistic presentations, confirming once again that Twin Lakes Elementary’s got talent! Everyone had a great time and enjoyed tasty refreshments. The students also broke out into small groups to learn more about the importance of family values. Pastor Louis from Elevate Church, families, and school staff shared their thoughts on the critical role that families play and the importance of investing time into children’s lives.

This family night is part of a series of family-oriented events initiated by School Board Member Alonso to promote greater parental and family involvement in children’s education. By providing a platform for families to come together and celebrate the achievements of their children, Mr. Alonso aims to reinforce the importance of parental engagement in the educational journey of our students. Board Member Alonso thanked all the community partners, administration, and families who made this event a resounding success!

“I am delighted to see such an overwhelming support from the families of Twin Lakes Elementary,” said Board Member Alonso. “Events like these not only showcase the incredible talents of our students but also serve as a reminder of the invaluable role that parents play in their children’s academic success. By working together, we can create a supportive environment where every child can thrive.”

Parental involvement is crucial for students’ success. Statistics indicate that 95% of students with actively involved parents have better mental and physical well-being, providing them with a good foundation to excel academically. Students with involved parents experience reduced stress and anxiety levels, improved concentration in the classroom, and improved cognitive abilities. Moreover, 62.1% of students agree that parental involvement boosts self-esteem, which is key for academic achievement. Parental involvement empowers students to develop a positive self-image and to believe in their abilities, reduces their fear of failure, encourages them to take risks, and develops perseverance.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers releases Miami-Dade Back Bay Coastal Storm Risk Management Draft Feasibility Report

Today, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Norfolk District, in partnership with Miami-Dade County, released the Miami-Dade County Back Bay (MDBB) Coastal Storm Risk Management (CSRM) Feasibility Study Integrated Draft Report and Environmental Assessment for a 30-day public review and comment period.

The MDBB CSRM Feasibility Study Draft Report is a detailed summary of the coordination, plan formulation, and alternatives evaluations for addressing coastal storm risk for the highly vulnerable communities in Miami-Dade County. The Draft Report reflects the extensive collaboration with Miami-Dade County, municipalities, stakeholders, and environmental resource agencies, and is an interim response containing actionable recommendations for managing storm surge flooding risks in the short-term while additional study efforts continue.

“This report marks the initial stride in a comprehensive long-term collaborative strategy with our partners, Miami-Dade County, aimed at improving coastal resiliency,” said Col. Brian Hallberg USACE Norfolk District Commander. “We value the public’s input during this critical 30-day comment period, recognizing its integral role in refining the report and ensuring its effectiveness in addressing community needs.”

The report is also considered an integrated National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) document, meaning it discusses current environmental conditions, the potential impacts and benefits of alternatives, and documents the environmental compliance status with federal and state resource agencies pursuant to NEPA.

“This Draft Report is a major milestone in our journey to make Miami-Dade County future-ready and protect our residents and businesses from increased storm surge,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “From the beginning of this process, we’ve listened to the community and incorporated your feedback. We now ask our residents to once again offer your input as we continue refining the plan to include the nature-based solutions and other measures you have suggested. This will maximize our golden opportunity to receive federal funding to advance projects that provide yet another layer of integrated protection for our community.”

The Draft Report will include a mix of initial recommended measures that will reduce coastal storm damage prioritizing communities at the highest risk for storm surge flooding. These include non-structural strategies such as floodproofing critical infrastructure (fire stations, wastewater pump stations, etc.), elevating residential structures, and floodproofing nonresidential buildings, such as businesses.

The report also includes a request for Congress to authorize two new programs, a Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) Pilot Program and a Nonstructural Program. The NBS Pilot Program proposes working with partners to design, implement, and monitor a mix of NBS projects to learn about storm surge damage reduction and ecosystem health benefits and improve the USACE’s ability to apply these solutions in other current and future coastal storm risk management feasibility studies. The Nonstructural Program proposes to develop and implement nonstructural measures for unique buildings and for which USACE policy guidance and implementation practices are still being developed.

How can the public provide input?

The public meeting will be primarily open house style with a short presentation led by the joint Miami-Dade County and USACE project team at approximately 6 P.M.
  • Virtually through the Public Commenting Tool at https://arcg.is/0ub0Cf or by attending a virtual public meeting on May 6, 2024 at 6 P.M.

The feedback received will be considered by the joint USACE and Miami-Dade County study team and used to inform the development of the final feasibility report, which aims for Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) authorization in the upcoming WRDA of 2024.
