    Cancer survivors to hear pet tales at SMH, May 16

    Cancer survivors and their loved ones will learn how the companionship and affection of pets can nurture them in ways that nothing else can during Cancer Survivors Day on Sunday, May 16. The free event will run from 1 to 3 p.m. at South Miami Hospital’s Clarke Education Center, S. Dixie Highway (US 1) and SW 62nd Avenue.

    Pet therapy dog handlers and their furry friends will be on hand to discuss how their visits give an emotional boost to hospitalized cancer patients. And, Beth Ruhmann, Arts in Healthcare Supervisor at South Miami Hospital, will provide information on the many benefits of pets.

    “Research is proving that it doesn’t matter what type of pet it is to derive a benefit, just as long as the animal is of interest to the patient,” said Ruhmann, who supervises the pet therapy program at South Miami Hospital. “Studies show that contact with pets reduces anxiety and lowers blood pressure and heart rate. The animals’ unconditional love and affection can increase morale and feelings of well-being.”

    Cancer survivors, their families and friends are invited to this uplifting event sponsored by the Baptist-South Miami Regional Cancer Program. A light lunch will be served. The event is free, but reservations are required. Call 786-596-2871 by Wednesday, May 12.

    Attendees are encouraged to bring a photo of a favorite past or present pet for a “Pet Pin-up” display. Those attending also can share stories about how their four-legged friends helped them cope with illness.

    The Baptist-South Miami Regional Cancer Program is part of Baptist Health South Florida, the largest, faith-based, notfor- profit healthcare organization in the region. Cancer services are offered at Baptist, Baptist Children’s and South Miami Hospitals. Baptist Health also includes Homestead Hospital, Mariners Hospital, Doctors Hospital, Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute, and Baptist Outpatient Services.

    Area artists donate art supplies to Ponce de Leon Middle School

    This year Mike Thompson of “art 4 u by mike,” Cece Saba of Sunset Gallery and Framing and local artists have supplied Ponce de Leon Middle School’s art program and teacher Pat Guerin with some much-needed art supplies.

    “Art in the breezeway” of Coral Gables, in coordination with South Miami Art Walk, have led a grass roots effort to donate art supplies in Coral Gables and South Miami on the first and second Friday of each month. Mike Thompson leads this effort in honor of his late wife, Carole Hughes Thompson, who taught art at Ponce De Leon School for 32 years.

    “I think she would be very proud of our local artist efforts,” said Thompson.

    Sunset Gallery and Framing has been instrumental in showing the children’s art during the South Miami Art Festivals. Owner Cece Saba has donated a considerable amount of art mat board to Pat Guerin’s class. “The children are so appreciative,” said Pat Guerin.

    On April 14th Mike Thompson delivered the third group of art supplies to finish out the school year.

    These artists and businesses have rallied around this grass roots effort. Coral Gables “Art in the breezeway” wishes to thank Orlando Abeia from Greater Miami Investments, Wayne Eldred from Tarpon Bend and Dave Wilson from The Sports Exchange for supplying a fabulous venue at 65 Miracle Mile. This art exhibit will continue during the summer on the first Friday of each month. Artists Mike Thompson, Emilo Hector, Carole Kingsley, Miss Carmen, Mabel Mayana, Imaculada Menedez, Michael Warshosky Fred Hunt, Anna Maria Wimbley, Edgar Hernendz, A.L. Black, A. J. Brown, Mariska, Dania Sierra, Tresa Callatori, Frank Sperich, Mercedes Delgato and Carmen MacKrell have all participated.

    In South Miami Cece Saba and Sunset Gallery and Framing will be presenting a bi-monthly Art Opening this summer for all to enjoy.

    PS Business Park adds 3.2 million sq. ft. center

    Art night brings awareness for Autism

    In an effort to bring more awareness to autism during the month of April, designated as Autism Awareness Month, Art Night South Miami will host an exhibit of artists diagnosed with autism during the SoMi ARTWALK © program for this coming Friday, April 9. In conjunction with the University of Miami – Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (UM-NSU CARD) artists from the program will have their work displayed in the ArtWalk headquarters courtyard located at the First National Bank of South Miami at 5780 Sunset Drive. Two artists being featured are Christian Early, Acrylic on Canvas & Marker on Paper and Rachel Olin-Levy, Mixed Medium – Nature Theme.

    UM-NSU CARD is a South Florida non-profit organization, committed to providing FREE family support, outreach, and educational support services to children and adults of all levels of intellectual functioning who have Autism Spectrum Disorders. The Center provides services for over 5,100 families throughout the tri-county. Services include family support, technical assistance and consultation, parent and professional training programs, and public education activities. The center supports research in a variety of disciplines to better understand the causes and potential treatments for the disorder.

    Other venues around the South Miami Town Center will exhibit works of other local artists.

    Held on the second Friday of the month from October through May, more than 20 participating Host Venues throughout town showcase local artists while offering guests some light refreshments.

    Dressed in vivid artists’ smocks and greeting visitors, our Art Night Ambassadors will be eye-catching in the town center handing our SOMI Artwalk maps and answering questions. “GET YOUR ART ON” t-shirts will be available for sale at the art night headquarters.

    Local insurance agency reaches

    When E. H. Reynolds arrived in Miami in 1910 the business world and South Florida as a whole looked much different than is the case today.

    Miami-Dade had a population of just 12,000 people and many local roads were paved with sea shells. One hundred five years later and some 65 years after starting his independent insurance agency, the Reynolds family has become an institution in the insurance industry.

    In 1910, E.H. Reynolds began his insurance career in Florida and then in 1950 founded his independent agency in downtown Miami. During the 1950s, his son, Douglas, entered the agency while earning a degree from the University of Miami, bought the agency from his father, and moved its office to Coral Gables while also taking on a partner that led to their changing the business’ name to the one that exists today, Morris & Reynolds Insurance.

    In 1979, Morris retired and sold his interest in the firm back to Douglas, who relocated the agency to suburban Miami in the Village of Palmetto Bay where it has been based for over three decades.

    In 1983, the founder’s grandson, Bob, joined the agency as a third generation insurance broker and today, along with his wife, Julianne, own and operate Morris & Reynolds.
