Mayor Lago… No One Won

Let’s put aside for a moment whether or not you think Mayor Vince Lago should be recalled from office. The acrimony and division Mayor Lago has sowed in the city of Coral Gables over the past year is to the detriment of all residents. Mayor Lago declaring victory over a recall effort because eighty signatures may not have matched up is as tone deaf as his demeanor over the past year.

How We Got Here

One year ago, the affable and seemingly popular Gables Mayor lost control of the city commission. The candidates he endorsed and raised money for lost handedly at the polls. The central issue was what residents saw as runaway overdevelopment. Rather than acknowledge the will of the voters, Mayor Lago took a combative position and began warring with a majority of the commission. Commission meetings in the City Beautiful have resembled those in the City of Miami, an embarrassment for a community that prides itself on civility.

Mayor Lago lost control of the commission before residents learned from Miami Herald reporting that he was entangled with Coral Gables developer Rishi Kapor. Lago did not disclose that the developer had paid him and his businesses close to $1 million dollars as a realtor and in rent. This revelation sent one-time supporters like city activist Maria Cruz over the edge.

Lago’s opponent’s leading the recall claim “Malfeasance & Misfeasance”, a claim some legal experts say would be tough to defend. Yet, by this point Lago’s habit of aggressively arguing with anyone who challenged him was well worn. The accusation of him trying to bully perceived opponents real and otherwise is real and one I have seen firsthand.

Three weeks ago, a frustrated Mayor Lago penned a letter to all residents where he personally blasted three of his fellow commissioners. The missive was poorly received by even his supporters and was seen as beneath him and the office of the Mayor not to mention strategically unsound.

The Recall

Lead by a one-time Lago supporter, Maria Cruz, the effort needed to produce 1649 petitions signed by Coral Gables voters. They turned in 1719 signed petitions and the Miami-Dade Department of Elections declared in a letter to the Gables city clerk that 1533 were validated.

The memo from Elections Director Christina White was vague and had several inaccuracies. Most importantly she does not explain why 180+ petitions were ruled invalid. Were there problems matching signatures, which we all know change over time? Where addresses, dates of birth or names not clear due to handwriting? If this is the case the public deserves and explanation and those voters deserve a chance to clarify. Why is Chairperson Maria Cruz’s own petition not being counted as valid?

Additionally, the Director of Elections writes that she followed the guidance from the city and the Coral Gables city charter. This is impossible as the city charter doesn’t address the issue of recalls and the organizers were basing their effort on a state statue.

Also concerning is that the Elections Department leaked the exact number of valid petitions on Saturday, three days earlier, to journalist blogger Elaine de Valle, before telling Coral Gables or recall committee. Even the date of the memo was wrong adding to the over-all sloppiness of the Department of Election process on this matter.

Where Do We Go From Here

In just thirty days a substantial number of Gables voters signed a petition calling for Lago’s removal. He could have shown some humility and said he would be open to meeting with those who oppose him and begin to build bridges. Humility is not his strength and he clearly chose the opposite tact.

The recall committee can ask the courts to intervene on a process that has been shrouded in secrecy and sloppiness, but that is unlikely to succeed.

Mayor Lago needs to recalibrate. On the last day of the recall both the Police and Fire Department representatives drafted a letter claiming that Lago had not supported first responders and his policies had in fact made Coral Gables less safe for residents and visitors alike.

While the recall appears to be done for the moment will Mayor Vince Lago have the self-awareness to dial back the rhetoric and offer an olive branch to his detractors? Time will tell.

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and Patients Celebrate 40 Years of Epilepsy Surgery Innovation

The Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Brain Institute clinical team gathers for a photo at Zoo Miami, during the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Epilepsy Surgery Program.

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Brain Institute celebrated the 40th anniversary of its Epilepsy Surgery Program in March with a patient reunion at Zoo Miami. The fun-filled event was attended by nearly 200 former patients and their family members as well as clinical and support staff.

“As a clinician, there is nothing more rewarding than gathering with former patients and their families to celebrate lives made better through the work that we do,” said Dr. Trevor Resnick, Director of the Brain Institute’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. “For patients who have struggled with medically resistant seizures, surgical intervention is often the key to a more normal life and a brighter future. It is an honor to have served these families and help them find a path forward. Our leadership in care of patients with epilepsy is one more reason why Nicklaus Children’s is the hospital where children matter most,” he said.

Nicklaus Children’s Brain Institute is an internationally recognized leader in caring for children and infants with epilepsy. The South Florida-based program offers the latest medical and surgical interventions to help children with epileptic seizures.

After its founding in 1984, the program fast became a pioneer in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of children with seizure disorders, and advancing global acceptance of surgical interventions in children with epileptic regions.

Since its inception, the program has performed over 1,600 surgeries for children with epilepsy. Two years post-surgery, 84.5 percent of patients who underwent surgery for temporal lobe epilepsy remain seizure free while 71.6 percent of patients who received surgery for extra-temporal lobe epilepsy remain seizure free. These outcomes have remained stable for the past 10 years.

Today, the program continues its commitment to providing the latest and most comprehensive care options with the goal of offering patients and families the best chance of achieving seizure freedom. Current techniques include laser and focused beam ultrasound to ablate epileptic areas of the brain that are difficult to reach. Neuromodulation, including Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), and Responsive Neuro Stimulator (RNS) implants are also utilized to detect and stop seizures.

During the reunion, children and their families, as well as adult patients who underwent care as children, celebrated with food, fun and games as well as shared time to explore the zoo.

Camillus House Announces Leadership Changes As Veteran Homeless Advocate Retires

Chief Operating Officer Eddie Gloria

Camillus House, a non-profit that has provided life-changing services to the poor and homeless for more than six decades, today announced the retirement of CEO Hilda M. Fernandez.

Fernandez has served as Camillus’ chief executive for the past seven years, leading the organization through a period of immense growth and the challenges of providing services to a vulnerable population during a pandemic. She is well-known for her knowledge of the system of care for the homeless in Miami-Dade – a system long recognized as a national model and instrumental in developing almost thirty years ago; she twice served as the Executive Director of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust.

The Camillus Board has appointed Chief Operating Officer Eddie Gloria as Acting CEO while they conduct a search to ensure continuous, strong leadership through the transition. Gloria has over two decades of non-profit experience, including ten years at Camillus House. Throughout his career, Gloria also served as the Chief Operating Officer for the Alpha-1 Foundation and as the Chief Executive Officer of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice in Florida.

“Hilda’s compassionate leadership has been instrumental in helping Camillus address the ever-changing needs of the men, women and children that come to us for help,” said Camillus House Board Chair Paul Lowenthal. “Working with Eddie during this transition will ensure that we maintain our momentum – helping us further identify ways to expand services while continuing our focus on operational and programmatic efficiency. Camillus is fortunate to attract qualified leaders who understand the population we serve and do so with compassion and professionalism.”

“I am proud of what we collectively accomplished and thankful for the opportunity to serve such an amazing organization that means so much to so many,” said Fernandez, who will remain at Camillus through the end of May.

About Camillus House

Camillus House has provided humanitarian services to persons who are poor and homeless in Miami-Dade County, Florida, since 1960. As a ministry of the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God, Camillus House was originally established to serve Cuban exiles. From its humble beginning as a small soup kitchen, Camillus has grown into a full-service organization offering a comprehensive “system of care” including food, clothing, emergency, transitional and permanent housing, physical and mental health care, and substance abuse treatment.
