Maria Alejandra Castaño: Passionate Leadership at Loretta & the Butcher

Coconut Grove, Miami’s oldest neighborhood, has quietly evolved into one of South Florida’s most successful business communities – and it’s no accident. With its blend of charm, strategy, and community, the Grove offers a blueprint for how local economies can thrive.

At the heart of its success is a strong sense of community. And at the heart of the Grove’s bustling downtown district are independent businesses, like Loretta and the Butcher on Commodore Plaza, with Maria Alejandra Castaño at the helm.

By cultivating a loyal customer base that values authenticity and true connection, Castaño’s quaint bistro tucked between the busy shops and other businesses on Commodore Plaza has fast become a beloved neighborhood staple.

“Since the very beginning, we wanted to be more than just a restaurant. We’ve built real relationships with our guests and with other businesses in the Grove. We know their names, their favorite dishes, and make each visit one that feels like they’re home.” The loyalty and warmth of their customers continue to fuel the restaurant’s growth.

    Culinary Passion

With a passion for Argentine cuisine and making guests feel at home, she’s created a fine restaurant that’s a one way ticket to Buenos Aires. Her journey proves that with the right ingredients, vision, and boldness, anything is possible.

Beyond perfecting beef, Loretta & the Butcher honors an iconic Argentine culinary tradition, led by the passionate and determined Castaño. As a powerful woman in a male-dominated industry, she runs a restaurant that embodies authenticity, quality, and community in the deepest sense.

Castaño’s love for food began in her childhood, growing up in Colombia where meals are a symbol of unity and tradition. “Since I was a little girl, cooking has been my passion and my way of expression. And I’ve always been fascinated by how the right dish can tell a story, awaken emotions, and bring people together.”

Her admiration for Argentina’s beloved cuisine eventually led her to acquire Loretta & the Butcher, where she brings the essence of la parrilla (Argentine grill) to the Grove. With respect for each cut of meat and a dedication to using the highest quality ingredients, she ensures each dish represents the true flavors of Argentina.

“Loretta & the Butcher is more than a restaurant; it’s a total experience. We want patrons to feel transported to Argentina through flavors, aromas, and the welcoming warmth of the atmosphere.”

What Makes an Argentine Grill Great?

A true Argentine “parrilla” is more than just grilled meats, it’s a whole ritual. “Everything starts with the highest quality cuts, cooked over fire with patience. Coarse salt is all the seasoning that’s needed to highlight the succulent meat’s true flavor.”

But beyond the food, it’s about connection. “A true parrilla is meant to be shared with friends and family, with melted provoleta, a glass of wine, and, of course, chimichurri to add the final touch. It’s about friends and family gathering around the grill, living in the moment filled with passion.” At Loretta & the Butcher, every meal is designed to capture that spirit.

    Breaking Restaurant Industry Barriers

Running a restaurant as a woman comes with some challenges, but Castaño has always met them head-on with the utmost confidence and perseverance. “The biggest challenge has been breaking biases and stereotypes in a typically male-dominated industry, and proving that female leadership is equally strong and strategic.”

Balancing her roles as a businesswoman, mother, and wife is no easy feat, but Castaño has cultivated a restaurant known for both excellence and inclusivity. “Seeing Loretta and the Butcher grow, curating a unique experience, and being passionate about leadership shows that you can balance those three crucial roles without giving up your dreams.”

    The True Taste of Argentina

Loretta & the Butcher’s menu is specifically curated to immerse their guests in the authentic Argentine flavor. Signature dishes include bife de chorizo, ojo de bife, and entraña, all grilled to perfection.

Another standout is Arroz del Gaucho, a bold, comforting dish that echoes Argentina’s rich culinary traditions, alongside their world-famous empanadas, crispy on the outside, boasting a variety of fillings, and bursting with flavor inside. Each dish transports guests straight to Buenos Aires, one bite at a time.

What’s Next for Loretta & the Butcher?

Looking ahead, Maria Alejandra envisions expanding Loretta & the Butcher while maintaining its warm and welcoming atmosphere. “We’re exploring new opportunities to bring our delicious dishes to even more people, all without losing the signature warmth that defines us.”

Her journey is far from over, and that passion burns bright, strong as ever. “Oh, I believe the best is yet to come,” she says.

Florida’s Yellow License Plate Sticker May Soon Be History and Miami-Dade’s Tax Collector Is Pushing the Change

A long overdue fix to Florida’s vehicle registration system is officially moving forward, and it begins with the end of the yellow license plate sticker as we know it.

Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez’s proposal to eliminate Florida’s outdated yellow registration decal is advancing following the formal filing of companion legislation in the Florida House and Senate. The legislation would remove the physical peel and stick sticker while keeping every registration and renewal requirement fully intact.

The message is simple. The yellow sticker has outlived its purpose.

Law enforcement already verifies registration instantly through secure, real time digital systems used statewide. The physical sticker adds cost, delay, and opportunity for fraud without providing any meaningful public safety benefit.

“This proposal grew out of what we see every day in the Tax Collector’s Office,” said Fernandez. “The yellow decal creates unnecessary costs, delays, and opportunities for fraud without improving compliance. Registration is already verified digitally in real time. Eliminating the decal modernizes the system, protects taxpayers, and allows government to operate more efficiently without compromising public safety.”

For drivers, the sticker is a recurring nuisance. It fades, peels, gets stolen, or goes missing, forcing residents to pay replacement fees and wait for mailed stickers. For counties, it means ongoing costs tied to printing, mailing, inventory management, and fraud mitigation. Those costs would disappear under the proposed reform.
Ending the yellow sticker delivers clear benefits:

    • Real savings by eliminating recurring production and mailing costs that add up to millions statewide

    • Less fraud and theft by removing a commonly stolen and misused item

    • A better customer experience by allowing drivers to renew without managing a fragile sticker

    • Modern enforcement that relies on digital verification already trusted by law enforcement
Several states have already moved away from physical registration decals without disruption, relying entirely on electronic verification systems.

“I’m grateful to Representative Fabricio and Senator Rodriguez for filing this legislation and carrying this idea forward,” Fernandez said. “This is a strong example of how local operational experience can inform state policy and deliver real savings and better service for Florida residents.”

The Miami-Dade County Tax Collector’s Office will continue working with state lawmakers, fellow tax collectors, and law enforcement partners as the legislation advances.

If approved, the legislation would take effect July 1, 2026.

    Art Week in Style

Original Garment by Radmila Lolly at Mana Pop up VIP Opening

All year long, we count down to the holidays Christmas, Hanukkah, and the promise of a new year. Yet in Miami’s creative circles, there is one moment on the calendar that reigns supreme. No matter how festive the season already feels, for artists, designers, and cultural tastemakers alike, the most anticipated time of year is always the first week of December. Ladies and gentlemen, that week is Art Basel and with it, Miami Art Week in full force.

You may be wondering which exclusive event I attended that seamlessly bridged the worlds of art and fashion. I had the privilege of attending the VIP opening night on December 3rd, 2025, at the Mana Fashion Pop-Up, a curated experience offering a behind-the-scenes look at where Miami’s fashion designers shine during the city’s most electric week. The event celebrated emerging brands while inviting guests to explore new collections and indulge in early holiday shopping.

Designer Daniela Uribe(Right) and Lourdes Carvajal (Myself Fashion Journalist for MCNP Left)

Held in the heart of Wynwood, Miami’s most iconic art district, and directly across from the Red Dot Art Fair, the evening unfolded with effortless glamour. Guests were welcomed with glasses of champagne, setting the tone for a night that called for dressing to impress. As attendees mingled and made their way through each booth, it became immediately clear that this was more than a pop-up it was a storytelling platform. Each designer presented not only garments, but a vision: narratives woven into silhouettes, fabrics, and craftsmanship, reflecting how they see themselves contributing to the fashion industry today.

From streetwear and sustainable fashion to athletic apparel and accessories, the range was expansive and thoughtfully curated. There was something to captivate every fashion enthusiast in attendance. Notably, the Mana Fashion Pop-Up extended its reach far beyond South Florida, welcoming designers from New York City, Albania, Colombia, and Bolivia, reinforcing Miami’s growing reputation as an international fashion destination.

Designer Barth ( Left) and BeeLiver foundation Founder Yolanda Gonzalez ( Right)

One of the highlights of the evening was the opportunity to connect with Brooklyn-based designer Barth, winner of The Hype Season 2 on HBO. Barth walked me through his creative process while showcasing his one-of-a-kind denim jeans, a standout piece that has garnered attention well beyond the fashion circuit. The jeans have notably been worn by Machine Gun Kelly Recently. Our conversation underscored the importance of individuality, authenticity, and storytelling in modern design values clearly reflected in his work.

The night also emphasized the growing role of community and digital innovation in fashion. Mana Fashion welcomed Barth as an ambassador from The Real Faith Tribe, a digital platform dedicated to empowering fashion creators through resources, visibility, and opportunities to grow. Their presence reinforced the event’s mission: not only to showcase talent, but to actively support designers in building sustainable, long-term careers.

The evening was further elevated by notable appearances from influential figures within the industry. Influencer Luana Vjollca was in attendance, showcasing her widely recognized athletic line, Lulu by Luana. Miami’s beloved Cuban fashion designer René Ruiz made his presence known, alongside Colombian designer Daniela Uribe. The event also drew critically acclaimed fashion photographer Ellen von Unwerth, whose presence underscored the cultural significance of the night.

( Myself ) Lourdes Carvajal Fashion Journalist for MCNP

As the night came to a close, guests gathered for photo opportunities and departed with thoughtfully curated goodie bags highlighting what Mana Fashion has in store to continue positioning Miami as a global fashion hub for emerging designers. It’s safe to say I didn’t leave empty-handed walking out with two or three pieces felt inevitable when creativity and craftsmanship are that compelling.

The evening was filled with excitement, creative energy, and inspired minds each designer proudly sharing what they have been building season after season. I left eager to see how these talents continue to evolve and already looking forward to the next event worth covering during Art Week next year.

Are you ready? Come join us at Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office

Are you ready? Come join us at Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office

Law enforcement isn’t for everyone — and that’s exactly why it matters so much.

At the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, we’re proud to offer good pay and benefits, opportunities for advancement, and a strong sense of purpose. But before anyone applies, I encourage them to pause and ask themselves why. Why do you want to wear this uniform?

Why do you want to serve?
Becoming a deputy is more than a job. It’s a way of life — a commitment to protect and serve your community, to step forward when others need help, and to carry the responsibility that comes with earning the public’s trust.

We see people from all walks of life answer that call. One of our current academy cadets is 53 years old. He always wanted to become a deputy, but kept putting it off. This year, he finally decided it was time. He’s in the academy now — running, training, studying — and living his dream. His story reminds us that it’s never too late to follow your calling.

Whether you’re 21 or 51, this work asks a lot of you. It’s physically demanding. You’ll run, you’ll do push-ups, and you’ll be tested in ways that push you to your limits. You’ll also have to master the academic side — understanding the law, learning our policies, and developing the judgment that defines good policing.

Applicants must have a high school diploma, no felony convictions, and a strong moral compass. Additional education or military experience comes with incentive pay. Classes last nine months, and each typically includes about 50 cadets. We currently have two academy classes in session, and our next one begins in February. Applications are open, and we’ve received hundreds — a testament to the growing interest in serving this great community.

To those who are thinking about it — even if you’re unsure — come learn more. Talk to our recruiters. Visit our training center. See for yourself what it means to be part of something bigger than yourself.

Because when you step up, it strengthens the community.

There are dangers, yes. But there are also moments of deep reward — the kind that come from helping someone on their worst day, protecting a neighbor, or mentoring a young person who reminds you of why you joined in the first place.

If you’re ready to serve with pride, purpose, and heart — we’re ready for you.

For more information, go to the Miami-Dade Sherriff’s Office Website, “Career: Deputy Sheriff,” at www.miamidade.gov/global/police/careers-police-officer.page
