‘If you don’t like dark roast, this isn’t the coffee for you’: How exclusionary ads can win over the right customers

Trying to be everything to everyone can backfire. Illustration by Karen Anne Wallach using Gemini
Trying to be everything to everyone can backfire. Illustration by Karen Anne Wallach using Gemini

Imagine you are searching for a new mattress online and find something surprising. The retailer displays an ad featuring a “Mattress Comfort Scale” running from 1 (soft) to 10 (firm), followed by the message that if your firmness preference is at either end, this mattress is not for you. Wait … what? A retailer telling someone not to buy its product? No way!

Why would a company tell potential buyers that the product might not suit them? Our team of professors – Karen Anne Wallach, Jaclyn L. Tanenbaum and Sean Blair – examines this question in a recently published article in the Journal of Consumer Research.

Marketers spend billions trying to persuade consumers that a product is right for them. But our research shows that sometimes the most effective way to market something is to say that it isn’t for them. In other words, effective marketing can mean discouraging the wrong customers rather than convincing everyone to buy.

We call this “dissuasive framing.” Instead of saying a product is perfect for everyone, a company is up front about who it might not be for. Surprisingly, that simple shift can make a big difference.

We ran experiments comparing ads with dissuasive versus persuasive framing. For example, one coffee ad said, “If you like dark roast, this is the coffee for you.” Another said, “If you don’t like dark roast, this isn’t the coffee for you.” Most marketers assume the first version would work better. But for people who prefer dark roast, the second message outperformed it.

Across different products, from salsa to mattresses, and in a real Facebook campaign for a toothbrush brand, we consistently saw the same results. The dissuasive ad drove more engagement and clicks, making the brand feel more specialized and its product more appealing for the right customers.

Why? You might think it’s about fear of missing out, or reverse psychology, but we ruled out those explanations. Instead, we found that what really drives the effect is the perception of a stronger match between personal preference and product attributes.

When a message signals that a product may not suit everyone, consumers see it as more focused on a specific set of preferences. This sense of focus, which we call “target specificity,” makes the product feel like a better match for customers whose preferences align with it. For others, it feels less relevant, which helps companies reach their goal of attracting those who are most likely to buy.

Our results show a clear trend: When companies set boundaries in their messages, products appear more focused. This messaging strategy makes the intended customer feel like the product is a better match for them. People assume that if a product isn’t meant for everyone, it must be more specialized. That sense of specificity makes those in the target audience feel the product was designed just for them.

    Why it matters

These findings challenge one of marketing’s most enduring assumptions: that effective marketing comes from directly persuading customers that a product matches their needs. In today’s crowded marketplace, where nearly every brand claims to be “for you,” dissuasive messaging offers an alternative. By clearly signaling that a product may not be right for customers with different preferences, brands can communicate focus and specialization. Consumers see this as a sign that the company understands its own product and who it will best serve.

Our work also helps explain how people make what psychologists call compensatory inferences. This means consumers often believe that when a product tries to do too many things, it ends up doing each of them less well. Think of an all-in-one tool that can cut, twist, open and file – but few would say it performs any of those tasks better than the dedicated tool.

From a practical standpoint, dissuasive framing helps marketers communicate more effectively by defining the boundaries of their product’s appeal. In doing so, brands can build trust, strengthen connections with the right customers, and avoid spending their marketing dollars on those unlikely to purchase.

    What still isn’t known

Our research focused on products with clear attributes, such as taste or comfort, and on consumers who already knew their preferences. Future work could test how this approach works when people are less certain about what they like or when choices reflect self-expression rather than product fit.

Even with these open questions, one conclusion stands out. Defining whom a product is not for can help the right customers see that it truly fits them. By focusing on preference matching rather than universal appeal, brands can make their messages more targeted, more efficient and ultimately more effective. In other words, telling the wrong customers “This isn’t for you” can actually help the right ones feel that it is.The Conversation

Sanguich, top Cuban sandwich shop in US, celebrates opening in Aventura Mall

Timing couldn’t be more perfect for Sanguich, the most decorated Cuban sandwich shop in America and recipient of the ’22, ’23, ’24 and ’25 Michelin Bib Gourmand awards, to open up in the City of Excellence. Located in the Aventura Mall Treats Food Hall, Sanguich is known for their amazingly delicious Cuban sandwiches, shakes and the smoothest coffee in town. Aging with intention: Why more seniors are turning to Vi at Aventura

A “silver tsunami” has swept the nation, and no corner of the country is experiencing this wave quite like South Florida. As America experiences an unprecedented aging boom, with 10,000 Americans turning 70 every day, seniors and their families are making decisions about where and how they want to age earlier and more intentionally than ever before.

More seniors are asking the same questions: Why now? And just as importantly: Why Vi at Aventura? A Life Plan Community, Vi at Aventura blends independence, connection and long-term peace of mind. Residents enjoy resort-style living supported by on-site assisted living, skilled nursing, memory support and rehabilitation, if and when the need arises.

“The answer to ‘Why now, why Vi?’ often comes down to quality of life,” said Ryan Knisely, executive sales director at Vi at Aventura. “People walk through our doors and realize they don’t have to choose between independence and support. They can have both, and they can have it when it matters most.” For many new residents, the decision to move is prompted not by crisis, but by foresight. Seniors who have spent decades in their longtime homes are increasingly choosing to relocate while they are still active, engaged, and able to take advantage of everything a Life Plan Community offers. Often encouraged by adult children and influenced by proximity to family, they recognize the value of making a move on their own terms, before it becomes necessary rather than optional.

Lifestyle plays a significant role in that decision. At Vi at Aventura, residents enjoy amenities such as chef-driven dining, resident-led clubs, concierge services, fitness and wellness programs, lectures, and cultural events — creating an environment that supports both independence and connection, without the burdens of home maintenance or uncertainty about future care.

Judy and Joel Feinman moved from North Miami Beach four months ago and felt the community’s warmth immediately. “We are thrilled with the Vi,” Judy said. “We love the people, the staff and the energy. Our apartment floor even feels like our own little wing.” She said the combination of comfortable space and the reassurance of on-site healthcare made their decision even easier. The couple stays active, hosting friends in their apartment and spending time in the game room, at the Men’s Club and at dinner with new friends.

As the “silver tsunami” continues to reshape the region, Vi at Aventura is positioning itself as a community where seniors don’t just live, they thrive.

To learn more about Vi at Aventura, visit www.Aventura.ViLiving.com, call 305-912-0613, or email Aventura@viliving.com. Vi at Aventura is located at 19333 West Country Club Drive.

Fade Masters of Miami is Changing the Culture of Barbering with Express Facials

Martha Culibrk, CEO of Pure Essence Studio, emphasizes the importance of keeping the face hydrated Martha Culibrk, CEO of Pure Essence Studio, emphasizes the importance of keeping the face hydrated, especially during the cooler winter months.especially during the cooler winter months.

Fade Masters of Miami is raising the bar on male grooming. Owner Vinicio Larios kicks off the year with the launch of an Express Facial service—an intentional step toward blending precision barbering with modern wellness and luxury.

Yes, Fade Masters is certainly well-known for its expert haircuts, hair styling, shaves, and beard trims. But now, it’s expanding with the new Express Facial service that speaks to Miami’s climate, evolving grooming trends, and the rising demand for self-care among men.

“It’s absolutely essential to keep the face hydrated, especially considering the weather we get here,” Larios stressed. “Cooler months bring dry skin, and humidity makes things greasy. In South Florida, your skin goes back and forth – like a ‘yo-yo’ – all year. Keeping one’s facial skin in balance can be a challenge.”

    From Research to Rollout

So, after weeks of research, hands-on testing, and rigorous staff training by the experts at @pureessencestudio, Fade Masters’ new facial program for men is ready to roll. Look for it this winter as a seasonal offering, but ultimately, Larios plans to make it a permanent part of Fade Masters’ service roster.

“The goal is to create a space where men feel comfortable trying services they’ve always been curious about but often too shy to book in female-dominated salons,” he explained.  Put another way: “Many men have always wanted to try a facial,” he said. “They’re just shy about walking into a place that feels like it’s for women.

    What the Express Facial Includes

The 30–35 minute Express Facial uses exclusively organic products—avocado masks, bamboo exfoliation, jojoba and coconut serums, hydrating formulas, and optional crystal cooling treatments placed over the eyes. Clients slip on wireless earbuds, lie back with their vision and hearing softened, and unplug completely.

Good to know? Consultations pre-treatment allow men to customize the facial to their skin and comfort level. And the customer can also let the facial expert know whether they prefer to chit chat during the treatment or just enjoy peace and quiet.

“If you want to sleep, sleep.” Larios said. “If you want to just disconnect, do it. You get up from the chair rested.” Clients can choose either a quick session if the customer has a busy schedule, or deeper treatments recommended a few times a year.

    Designed for Miami’s Climate

Along with its Express Facial, Fade Masters also introduced a Scalp Hydration Mask that helps clients fight dryness, flakiness, and irritation that come with the cooler, drier winter air in Miami. “Healthy scalp, healthy skin—that’s where it starts,” he added, also stressing that  the shop now carries only organic, high-quality products that male models, stylists and industry pros use. In fact, Fade Masters of Miami just partnered with Moroccanoil so guests may be treated to professional-grade products that deliver real results.

A Modern Grooming & Wellness Hub

In the future, Fade Masters also plans to introduce organic shampoos, wrinkle smoothing, nail care, massage, gentle dermal exfoliation, and hair-loss treatments. While Fade Masters is not moving into the med-spa space in the traditional sense, Larios is crystal clear about the shop’s direction: It’s evolving into a modern grooming and wellness hub designed for real people with fast-paced schedules.

“Businesspeople don’t have a lot of time,” he said. “We’re offering something quick that still makes you look good and feel good. Put another way, he said this: “It’s not just about keeping up appearances—it’s about offering our customers a space where they can really invest in themselves.”

As for Fade Masters itself, the expansion in services is a vital part of its business journey. “We’re getting beyond just barbering,” he said. “We also desire to be a fabulous wellness place where people feel comfortable.”

In other words, men are more open to these kinds of spa-like treatments now. So, Fade Masters desires to stay competitive – offering access to the same level of care and quality that luxury spas provide.

“We want to be a powerhouse in the industry,’ Larios said. “This is just the start.”

Democracy Begins with You: Preparing for the 2026 Elections

In recent days, the world has witnessed decisive actions that reaffirm a shared commitment to freedom, democracy, and the rejection of authoritarian rule. For many in our community, developments impacting Venezuela are deeply personal. They reignite hope that the dream of a free and democratic society may soon become reality, not only in Venezuela, but also in Cuba, Nicaragua, and in all nations where people continue to live under oppression. The hope that these citizens may one day choose their leaders through elections that are democratic, free, transparent, and secure, without the legitimacy of their governments being questioned, is as strong as it has ever been.

As your Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections, my responsibility is clear: to safeguard the integrity of our elections while ensuring every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate confidently in our electoral process. Voting is more than a civic duty; it is the foundation of our democracy and the most powerful way for individuals to make their voices heard. Our office is committed to protecting that right through elections that are fair, accurate, transparent and accessible to all voters of Miami-Dade County.

Public participation is the heartbeat of democracy. Many members of our community come from places where the right to vote was restricted or denied altogether. Here in Miami-Dade, we are fortunate to live in a system where elections are secure, verifiable, and open to all eligible voters. Whether you choose to vote by mail, vote early when available, or vote on Election Day, our team works year-round to ensure each ballot is handled with care and every vote is counted accurately.

The year 2026 will be an important one for voters. Residents will have the opportunity to participate in municipal elections across our county, as well as statewide elections for Governor of Florida and federal races for the United States Senate and House of Representatives. These elections shape our communities, our state, and our nation. Being election-ready means staying informed, understanding the issues and candidates, and making a plan to vote. I encourage all voters to review their registration information and ensure it is up to date, including renewing a vote-by-mail request if they wish to vote by mail, as required by Florida law.

Beyond casting a ballot, there are meaningful ways to become directly involved in the election process. Our office is always looking for dedicated community members to serve as poll workers and assist on Election Day. Poll workers play a vital role in Miami-Dade elections by helping voters, ensuring polling places run smoothly, and upholding the professionalism and impartiality our elections demand. Serving as a poll worker is a rewarding way to contribute to democracy.

A strong democracy depends on informed, prepared, and engaged citizens. Our office stands ready to assist every voter, because your voice matters, and your participation strengthens us all.
