Robert Asencio and David Magnusson hosts of “The Silent Struggle” welcomed Michelle Fernandez, peer counselor for the West Care’s MRT (Mobile Response Team) in Miami-Dade County. As you recall, the MRT was highlighted in a previous episode a few weeks ago. 1-800-HELP YOU hopefully has resonated. It is a number worth remembering.
Michelle not only is a Recovery Coach Professional but has achieved it via “lived experience” and a lot of hard work of course. Michelle has a history of substance abuse that is quite compelling. She speaks of the “surrender” of relapse and how she got onto the road of recovery aided by a great deal of empathy and compassion by others.
Authentic, honest, and transparent, have enabled Michelle to take what she has learned during her silent struggle and remove the word “silent” from it. She has stepped out of the “ring” and moved into the corner to now aid those facing similar struggles. Losing a round or two is not indicative necessarily about how the fight ultimately ends. It is a 12-round battle. Michelle is there, like the best of the cornermen/women is boxing, to “walk alongside” their “fighter” (and make no mistake, it is a fight to overcome any addiction. It also takes the fighter’s heart and endurance to take it one-step at a time and succeed).
Michelle’s passion and dedication provide hope to those in need selfless acts. Michelle provides the hope that was provided for her in her darker days. The light shines brightly now and her radiance provides light for others to follow.
The episode is very uplifting and positive. It will guide you with an optimistic outlook for your future. Michelle is that cornerwoman that would make Angelo Dundee proud.
