Silent Struggle: Ep. 15 -Forensic Analysis of Convicted Killer’s Mental Illness Leading To Murder
Former Florida State Representative Robert Asencio and retired Police Chief David Magnuson are joined by Dr. Shari Schwartz, Forensic Psychologist to discuss the “Silent Struggle” of mental illness that led to murder and conviction of Matthew Guzman in Miami-Dade County.
Forensic Psychologist Dr. Shari Schwartz returned to Miami Community News to sit in with
Robert Asencio and David Magnusson for the 15th Episode of “The Silent Struggle.” The
discussion centered around schizophrenia and the havoc it can wreak on those afflicted by it. More precisely, the case surrounding Matthew Guzman, who in 2010 murdered two people during two separate incidents when, due to his schizophrenia, he believed both men were trying to hurt him.
In fact, it was just the opposite. Both were very supportive of Guzman. One even hired him. The case is thoroughly discussed, as Dr. Schwartz was involved in the early stages of it. A verdict was rendered onto Guzman in 2017 sentencing him to prison but avoiding the death penalty.
A lot of information is discussed giving the viewer a good sense of what schizophrenia is and how it affects people. It goes beyond hearing voices and/or seeing images that are just not there. It is an episode that will keep you spellbound looking to get more information. Do not miss it.
