Silent Struggle: Ep. 23 – 2nd Hand Trauma of Crime: A Public Defender’s Story

Vicarious trauma, second hand trauma, generational trauma all manifesting itself into mental health issues for those tasked, via United States Constitutional requirement (6th Amendment) in preserving our rights upon arrest. They need to be at their best in order to provide us with the best legal representation we are afforded. And yet somehow, they burn out, have anxiety, may drift into alcoholism, and subsequently resign, thus leaving the Public Defender’s Office shorthanded and in turn adding more stress to those who remain and pick up the slack.

On Episode 23 of The Silent Struggle (also found on many social media platforms as Silent Struggle Hosted by Military and Police Veterans) Robert Asencio and David Magnusson welcome Ms. Damaris Del Valle, the Chief of the Felony Division for the 11th Circuit Court Public Defender’s Office.

Ms. Del Valle’s perspective is a unique one in that she not only experiences the most serious of crimes in her defense preparation, but she also supervises the other Assistant Public Defenders who also experience the most serious of crimes in their case preparation. Her bird’s eye view of what is taking place in the Miami-Dade County Public Defender’s Office, In regard to mental health issues, it is incredibly sobering and eye opening. A new understanding becomes a reality.
