Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Following a close quarter shooting where a homicide subject was killed, a Miami-Dade Police Department SRT (SWAT) Officer confides his silent struggle of being haunted by the memory and vision of the subject in his rear view mirror. Sader yet is the stigma – fear of consequence(s) – associated with seeking help for mental health most experience.
It is clear, trauma takes a toll on people!
Perhaps none more than how it affects the personnel who serve in law enforcement. The mental wellness of those who keep us safe day in and night out can often be suppressed due to the stigma that surrounds open and honest dialogue concerning mental health wellness. How affected officers decompress after a constant barrage of stimuli that can alter one’s mental health due to the severity of the incidents experience is of the utmost importance. It can mean the difference of coming through the incident, struggling well or finding themselves deeper in a dark hole.

In Episode 27 of the Silent Struggle (found on streaming platforms as Silent Struggle Hosted By Military And Police Veterans), Robert Asencio and David Magnusson bring on long time Miami-Dade County (retired) Major, Mario Knapp to discuss these most important issues from the perspective of a police leader (the person who can provide the necessary changes). It should be noted that Mario is also a candidate in the upcoming Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s race.
