Robert Asencio and David Magnusson of “The Silent Struggle” turned the tables somewhat on today’s guest (Episode 13).  They interviewed the consummate journalist professional, Willard Shepard of NBC 6 regarding a slew of topics from military and law enforcement to the struggles both callings endure, to the concern over the inability of local residents to feed their families, to the media and their role in stoking the embers of mental health crisis with tribalistic opinionated newscasts at the national, cable level (not local).

Mr. Shepard, or more aptly, Colonel Shepard, aside from being a well-respected journalist, was also an Air Force fighter pilot who led air assaults in A-10s during the Gulf War. Additionally, as if that was not enough, he also graduated FIU Law School and is a practicing attorney here in South Florida.

The fast-paced conversation that develops, allows Mr. Shepard to carefully give his reasoning as to why he feels why military and law enforcement often times are left behind when it comes to the resources, they need to assist themselves as it applies to mental health issues. When he gives percentages, it makes a great deal of sense. PTSD issues arise.

The highest rate of food insecurity exists in South Florida.  That is enough to stop one in their tracks.  But it is also a pathway into mental health crisis. Couple that with the discussion about news media (nationally) trying to hit upon one’s beliefs and fears, separating families, and friends, and you have the making of one episode that you cannot miss.
