The “Silent Struggle” Series – Episode 12

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Coming on the heels of Episode 11, Robert Asencio and David Magnusson invited forensic psychologist Shari Schwartz to stay for another episode; this was centered around how and where to find assistance for mental health issues.  The topic of Episode 11 was very acute and stand-alone which would not allow for a smooth transition during the course of that most riveting conversation.  As such, it was determined that a brand-new episode of such importance would be preferable.

A discussion started with the concern of law enforcement professionals seeking assistance for mental health issues and getting the proper care they need.  A secondary discussion looked into the ramifications that could evolve from a law enforcement professional taking the initiative to better him/herself, to a point where they may feel “it is just not worth it.”

But as “The Silent Struggle” has professed in every episode, it is a strength not a weakness to seek out assistance for such issues just as it would be to seek out medical attention for a broken arm as opposed to declaring, “don’t worry, the arm will heal itself.”

Additionally, the conversation focused on mental health issues, it being everyone’s responsibility to assist.  Additionally, advice was given as to how one may be able to volunteer, following training, on assistance lines such as 988 and the Crisis Text Line. Being part of such volunteering will assist in moving the person in crisis from a hot moment to a cool moment.

With the understaffing of such assistance outlets, volunteering is exactly how the aforementioned responsibility can be divided up much to the benefit of those in crisis. This is an episode that you should watch with pen and paper at the ready so you can write down the information that will be disseminated.
