In Episode Six of “The Silent Struggle”, Sunny Isles Mayor Larisa Svechin joined Robert Asencio and David Magnusson to discuss her constituents who may be suffering now due to the war in Ukraine and recent heinous attack that took place last week in Israel (as well as the anticipated Israeli ground assault into Gaza). Mayor Svechin acknowledged that she has seen such a crisis with some in her city.
The discussion centered around Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety, depression as world events unfold. Additionally, generational trauma, vicarious trauma was discussed. There are triggers that can often times speed up a pending crisis. In reaching back to previous episodes, the discussion moved into areas where people “can reach out to someone” in their effort to get assessment and assistance. Mobile Response Team (1-800-HELP YOU) is an invaluable resource.
The focus is to not let the stories fade away. People are suffering, and unlike a broken arm, mental health issues take a longer time to heal. No one lets the broken arm fix themselves. They go for help. They see a specialist. Not doing so is not the wisest medical decision to make. Yet, sadly, a lot of people approaching crisis may not know how to get assistance, or perhaps refuse to do so out of fear of looking weak or getting ridiculed. Privacy is of the utmost concern. That does not exist with broken arms. It is a symbol of strength to get an arm cast signed. It is equally a symbol of strength to fix that which one cannot see.
“The Silent Struggle’s” overall main theme throughout all the episodes is the strength behind getting assistance as needed. The world is going through a tough time, and the mental health issues taking shape have very long tentacles. People are hurting and it is affecting them.
As Mayor Svechin so perfectly stated “we are all in this together.”
