Vets & Badges: Impact Of Trauma with Retired Assistant Police Chief John Hill

They want to hear the stories about things we wish to forget!

Whether military and/or law enforcement, that statement rings true with very little variation. And much like getting in the ring to box, no matter how good you are you get hit. You are going to feel trauma and the longer you enter that square circle, the greater the accumulative effects will be on the hits you are taking. Training and conditioning may aid your ability to bounce back, but you are still getting hit and it will compound.

In the most recent episode on Vets and Badges, Robert Asencio and David Magnusson examine the impact of repeated trauma in the realm of those things that shock the system; the senses. Retired Assistant Police Chief John Hill of the Allentown Police Department and veteran of the Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm) with the United States Marine Corps talks
about the trauma he has sustained.

Chief Hill describes the triggers that diverted him to a dark place such as the smells of petroleum and burnt bodies from his time in combat and how they transcended over into American law enforcement and the experiences he had there.

Chief Hill additionally talks about two days of such harrowing experiences, one day right after the other, that left him full of tormenting uncertainty and guilt. Through open discussion and a removal of the stigma that state those who seek help are weak, John was able to get back on track. There is a catharsis about speaking of the trials and tribulations of past experiences that often-time brings strength and a sense of purpose back to those hurting. This episode highlights one such person who gallantly served his nation and community and rose to the top of his profession in doing so. @VetsAndBadges-fe7it
