On Thursday, February 19, 2015, several students, parents, teachers and community members attended the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the Community Reading Oasis at Lake Forest Elementary School. Members of the City Commission and Staff, Broward Sheriff’s Office, Town of Pembroke Park elected officials and Staff, representatives of Scholastic Books along with Lori Mendez, Principal, and faculty from Watkins Elementary School were in attendance.
The Reading Oasis at Lake Forest Elementary School is the result of a joint collaboration among the City of West Park, the Town of Pembroke Park, Broward Sheriff’s Office, and Scholastic Books, as part of an effort to encourage and promote reading as a shared activity for families. The Community Reading Oasis is a room set up in an elementary school that includes more than 1,200 age-appropriate books for grades Pre-K through 6th grade; bookshelves; a modular reading center; a reading themed rug; bean bag chairs; a stereo listening center; a listening library featuring CDs with corresponding books, and a Smart Board. All residents are encouraged to take advantage of this beautiful new resource in our community while teaching our youth to enjoy reading together with their family members and loved ones.
