DISASTER PREPAREDNESS REMINDERS

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

School has just begun and I hope that everyone is off to a fantastic start to the new school year!  If there are residents with children who are still in need of back to school supplies, please reach out to the City of West Park at 954-989-2688 to inquire if there are any other supplies available.

September is a great time to recheck your hurricane preparedness plan to ensure that you and your family have a plan of action before, during, and after the storm. There is great safety and reassurance when you are prepared. With that being said, Florida has a sales tax holiday through September 8th which is the second disaster preparedness tax holiday. If you missed the first one, please don’t miss out on this great savings opportunity. It is definitely a great opportunity to get out, get prepared and save some money as we are now in the heart of hurricane season. As a reminder the Atlantic hurricane season ends on Thursday, November 30, 2023, so we have a few more months to go.

In addition to the disaster preparedness holiday, there is also a 7-day “tool-time” tax holiday that will start September 2 to coincide with the Labor Day weekend and offer sales tax exemptions on a variety of goods. Some of the tools that qualify are work gloves, hand tools and safety glasses, tool boxes, work boots and power tools. You can visit www.floridarevenue.com for more direct information and resources.

The Labor Day holiday means that summer is officially coming to a close. While everyone will be enjoying their typical holiday festivities, please reflect on the history behind the meaning of Labor Day. Labor Day celebrates the women and men who campaigned tirelessly for workers’ rights during the labor movement of the late 19th century.  Their hard fought wins are the reason for wins such as a 40-hour work week, safe work conditions, paid time off, and sick leave.  Those workers saw that there could be no freedom and liberty in this country without economic freedom for the working class. The holiday honors American workers, unions, and labor leaders. No matter how you may decide to celebrate, do so safely and take time to reflect and pay tribute to all the laborers, past and present, who helped build America and make it the country it is today.

Finally, the City of West Park is in budget season. If there are any ideas, initiatives or other financial considerations you think should be included in this year’s budget, please advocate for them in person at a meeting or in writing to me and my colleagues. I am always available to hear your concerns. Please email me at: ktouchstone@cityofwestpark.org.
