New year greetings : From Commissioner Joy B. Smith

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Season Greetings, family, neighbors, and friends of West Park! First and foremost, I sincerely hope that each and every one, despite the covid-19 pandemic, enjoyed the festive holiday season, and I wish you all a healthy and prosperous New Year! I pray for those whose love ones didn’t make it through 2020 due to the pandemic, and for those whose loved ones are going through the situation right now, and those who have loved ones in the hospital or at home in quarantine. As we enter 2021, I pray that covid-19 will not cross over with us.

Secondly, as your newly elected Commissioner, I would like to thank every resident and voter for their overwhelming support that you all showed me throughout the campaign in this past election season. Also, I would like to thank #TeamCommunityFirst, The Joy B. Smith Campaign, and Miramar Commissioner Alexandra Davis. I want to extend my gratitude to you all. When I knocked on your doors, you opened to my call and listened to my heart. Thank you. When I asked if I could put a sign in your yard, you never hesitated to say, “Yes, you would support me.” There is a thought that I would like to share with my community of West Park. We should soar like an Eagle!
Food For Thought: The Eagle Mentality

Do not be a parrot in life. A parrot talks way too much but cannot fly high. An eagle is silent and has the willpower to touch the sky. Here are the seven things that we can learn from the eagle.

1. Eagles fly alone at high altitudes. Eagles don’t fly with sparrows, ravens, and other small birds.
Meaning: Stay away from narrow minded people, those that bring you down. Eagles fly with eagles. There is a saying: “People you hang around will eventually determine the person you become. Keep good company.”

2. Eagles have vision. They can focus on something as far as 5 km away. No matter the obstacles, the eagle will not move his focus from the prey until he grabs it.
Meaning: Have a vision and remain focused in your life no matter the obstacles and challenges you may face. Do not give up, and you will succeed.

3. Eagles are fearless. An eagle will never surrender to the size and strength of its prey. It will always give the fight to win its target or regain its territory.
Meaning: No matter the size or how difficult your problem is, don’t give up; instead, face it. Successful people are fearless. They face issues head on.

4. Eagles are tenacious. Eagles love storms. When clouds gather, the eagles get excited. The eagles use the storm winds to lift themselves higher. Once it finds the storm’s wind, the eagles use the raging storm to raise themselves above the clouds. This allows the eagle to glide and rests its wings. In the meantime, all the other birds hide in the branches and leaves of the trees.
Meaning: Achievers are not afraid of challenges. Instead, they relish them and use them for profitability.

5. Eagles never eat dead meat. In other words, an eagle does not scavenge. It only eats the meat it kills.
Meaning: Do not rely on your past success. Keep looking for new frontiers to conquer. Leave your past where it belongs, in the past.

6. Eagles prepare for training. They remove the feathers and the soft grass in the nest so that the young ones get uncomfortable in preparation for flying, and eventually, they fly when it becomes too unbearable to stay in the nest.
Meaning: Leave your comfort zone; there is no growth there.

7. Eagles possess vitality. When the eagles grow old, their feathers become weak and cannot take them as fast and as high as it should. This makes him vulnerable and could make him die, so he retires to a place far away in the mountains, and while there, he plucks out the weak feathers on his body and breaks its beak and claws against the rocks until it is completely bare – a very bloody and painful process. He stays in his hiding place until he has grown new feathers, new beaks, claws, and then comes out flying higher than ever before.
Meaning: We occasionally need to shed off old habits, no matter how difficult. Things that burden us or add no value to our lives should be let go.

In conclusion, let us transition into 2021 with an “Eagle Mentality.” Let us focus, grow strength, come together in unison, and conquer the enemy within us.

Let us put our community first.
