Standing Together in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
By Mayor Felicia M. Brunson

“Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.”

Every October, cities across the nation unite under a common cause—Breast Cancer
Awareness Month. This month is not only about raising awareness, but also about showing our
support for the survivors, honoring the lives we have lost, and recommitting ourselves to the
fight for a cure.
A Community Affected, A Community United
Breast cancer does not discriminate. It impacts mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, friends, and
even men in our community. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 women in
the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Yet, thanks to advances in
research, education, and early detection, survival rates continue to improve.
Here in West Park, we know that behind every statistic is a real person, a real family, and a real
story. That is why we stand together—to remind those fighting this disease that they are never
alone.
The Power of Awareness
Breast Cancer Awareness Month serves as a reminder of the importance of early detection.
Routine screenings and mammograms save lives, and we must continue to encourage our loved
ones to prioritize their health. Simple conversations can lead to life-saving actions.

Throughout October, you will see residents, businesses, and organizations wearing pink ribbons,
illuminating landmarks in pink, and hosting community walks and events. These efforts are more
than symbolic—they represent hope, unity, and determination.
Honoring Survivors and Remembering Loved Ones
To our survivors, we celebrate your strength and courage. Your resilience inspires us all.
To the families who have lost loved ones, we stand with you in remembrance and support. Your
stories remind us why this fight must continue until there is a cure.
A Call to Action
I encourage every resident of West Park to get involved—whether by participating in awareness
events, supporting breast cancer research, or simply checking in on a friend or family member
who may be affected. Together, our voices, our compassion, and our advocacy can make a
lasting impact.
Closing Reflection
As your Mayor, I remain committed to ensuring that West Park is a city that not only raises
awareness but also uplifts and supports those who are touched by breast cancer. This October, let
us reaffirm our commitment to fighting this disease with love, strength, and unity.
Together, let’s stand strong. Together, let’s stand pink.
