Togetherness is a wonderful place to be! by Mayor Felicia Mychelle Brunson

Lately, the world seems to be lurching from one crisis to another. We’ve
experienced a global pandemic in recent years, dramatic changes to how we
conduct our daily lives, economic uncertainty, political and social turmoil, as well
as an array of natural disasters. Then there are personal traumas that people are
also dealing with, such as the loss of a loved one, declining health, unemployment,
divorce, violent crime, or tragic accidents. For many of us, it has been a time of
unprecedented struggle and upheaval.

As we kick off the new year, we often reflect upon the last twelve months. Looking
back helps us to acknowledge our experiences, recognize the lessons learned, and
be more prepared as we move forward and focus on the year ahead.
Our reflections of this past year will be different. We accomplished so much
together. We had an amazing year. But then, the end of an unseasonably gorgeous
day resulted in the loss of homes, structural damage, windows lost, and ripples of
pain across our city.

Serving as your mayor for the past 4 years has been an honor and a privilege. As I
reflect on the year gone by, a quote by Helen Keller comes to mind: “Alone, we can
do so little; together, we can do so much.” To me, these words embody the spirit of
West Park. We are better together!

As we embrace the New Year, I want you to know how very grateful and thankful I
am for you. I am confident that the New Year promises to be inspiring, motivating,
exciting, and nothing short of amazing in every sense of the word. What the past
year has rendered should give us pause as we look forward to the gifts and blessings
that we are yearning for in 2024.

Tiptoeing through the attics of our unheralded mistakes and failures and now
challenging them with renewed vigor and resolve is the perfect time for a fresh
start. Our very presence should be a beacon of a positive lifestyle filled with
wonderful goals, laughter, new opportunities of health and prosperity. Let’s
recognize the laudable successes of the past while embracing the compassion, the
fulfillment of our dreams and expectations, and wonderful memories we have yet
to make.

Thank you for your generosity and for your can-do spirit. The time, energy, and care
that you put into maintaining our sturdy sense of community, no matter what
disruption is hurled at us, inspires me daily and will forever be a great source of my
pride as your mayor.

Today, and every day, I believe that when we come together, anything is possible
– no feat is too great. I hope you will join me in prayer for greater togetherness
and greater prosperity. This year I know our community will continue to work
together to protect one another, love one another, and celebrate all that makes us
special. I also look forward to all the things we will accomplish together in 2024.

I wish you a Very Happy New Year!
