YARD SALE GUIDELINES-From the Building Department

During a time where “going green” is an everyday term, a yard sale is a great way for a community to recycle household items. In January of 2010 the City Commission recognized that the City’s code required a permit for any outdoor event. This meant that a simple church yard sale would require a full permit to be reviewed by many of the City’s departments. This was found not only to be onerous to the applicant, but an unnecessary task for City staff. The City’s code now differentiates between large scale outdoor events and smaller events, such as yard sales.

The City would like to remind residents and not-for profits, that yard sales may occur on private property, but not more than four times per calendar year and these events are limited to no more than three days per occasion. There is no permit required, only a $10.00 registration fee to the City. Churches and other not-for-profit entities may also have a yard sale, bazaar, market or similar event four times per year as long as there is no cooking, use of gas or electric or similar.

The registration must be submitted to the City at least three (3) days prior to the event.  A two square foot sign is also permitted and exempt from permitting requirements, but the sign can only advertise the event one day before, during and one day after. Larger events requiring generators, cooking and other mechanical workings will continue to be limited to twice per year and require an Outdoor Event Permit.

A yard sale is a good way to go green and keep items out of a landfill, as well as making some money on your unwanted items, but please be a good neighbor and follow the City’s limitation of four times per year.

Please call the City if you would like to register for a yard sale at: 954-989-2688.
