Youth Council and Camp Updates

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The City’s Youth Council members continue to serve the community through volunteerism, support and advocacy. They are currently collecting hygiene products to donate to youth experiencing homelessness and/or other challenges. The first set of supplies/collected items was dropped off at one of the Children’s Home Society’s youth shelters.

On January 28, 2023 the Youth Council also volunteered at the City’s monthly free fresh food distributions at McTyre Park. Additionally, the members attend bimonthly meetings at Mary Saunders Park where they learn about leadership, plan projects and activities, and support/mentor students at the City’s after school program.
Camp B.R.A.V.E.R.Y

Children participating in the Camp BRAVERY after school program continue to flourish. They are provided with academic support, healthy snacks and meals, field trips, community service projects, nutrition and fitness activities, cultural arts, enrichment activities, and career exploration opportunities. We had an excellent Winter Camp where the children attended various field trips and enjoyed a variety of fun, in-house activities.

The children celebrated Haitian Independence Day in January by learning about slavery and other events that led Haiti becoming the first black nation to declare its independence from France. The event was facilitated by Mr. Berwick Augustin (a Haitian Author, Educational Consultant and Keynote Speaker). They also celebrated Black History Month by doing activities showcasing black heroes and history makers – past and present. Children also learned about black activists, inventors, pilots, and other pioneers.
