The Social Services Division continues to carry out its mission of creating and fostering leaders while preparing children to become successful in school and beyond. The department does this with its many evidence-based preventive services that support education, advocacy, social-emotional learning, family cohesion and engagement. These programs include activities to keep children and youth in our community engaged through quality programming. We provide a safe and nurturing space as an alternative to keep children from participating and/or being exposed to activities that may lead to risky behaviors, which in turn may jeopardize their future.
Youth Council Program Highlights:
As we prepare the new generation of leaders for the future, we also want them to be knowledgeable about their community. In efforts to learn more about the City of West Park, the Youth Council recently took a citywide tour to learn key places and facts about its history.
The Youth Council members always find creative ways to support their communities. For example, to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the members participated in many activities. In addition to taking part in focus groups and educational activities, the members created and decorated Mary Saunders’ Park fences with pink and white ribbons.
During the City Commission meeting on September 6, 2023, the Youth Council members were honored with a winner’s trophy for a 2023 Municipal Youth Council Community Service Contest by the Florida League of Cities (FLCThe annual competition showcases community service projects performed by municipal youth councils that successfully address specific needs in their local communities. This award was in recognition of their many community service projects including, the ongoing hygiene supplies drive that the members are collecting and donating to the Children’s Home Society, a shelter that serves homeless youths.
