    A New Way Forward

    Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee
The people hired us to win for them—to restore hope, to be their voice, and to build a future that is bold, grounded, and rooted in the real lives of everyday Americans. Winning isn’t for the faint-hearted; it’s for those willing to face tough truths, embrace accountability, and stand up for what truly matters.

For too many years, we’ve questioned hard-working Americans about their commitment and loyalty to our party. We’ve demonized those who have climbed the economic ladder of capitalism, and we’ve ostracized those who struggle in poverty. The problem with the Democratic Party isn’t that we’re unfit to lead. The problem is that we’re refusing to channel who we truly are to make a positive impact for everyone.

This is the party of Roosevelt, Kennedy, Johnson, and Obama—leaders who believed in justice, opportunity, and the power of everyday Americans to shape a better nation. As leaders, they took action to create pathways for everyone to achieve the American dream. They rebuilt our infrastructure, integrated our schools, made healthcare accessible, and expanded civil rights to include all Americans. They bent the arc of government to implement a vision that uplifted every American, no matter their background or economic status.

Somewhere along the way, we allowed paid commentators, pollsters, and losing consultants to steer us off course…..away from the hard work of local, door to door, listening and community building. As a result, we’ve lost elections across the board, sacrificing the trust of the people and weakening our standing. But we know this isn’t who we are.

We also know that leaders like Vice President Kamala Harris embody what we need in our future leaders and Presidents. She is one of the most qualified vice presidents in the history of this country, with a powerful résumé and an exceptional depth of experience. She has joy, dignity, and pragmatism. To support qualified candidates in the future, we need to work at the grassroots level to plant the seeds and grow our  base to be open to accepting realistic boundaries and willing to coalesce to win for all Americans.

There is a very slim chance that we will see another presidential candidate with her résumé

It’s time we stop politicizing and demonizing. It’s time we start walking, stop the focus on talking, and focus on hearing the people. We must celebrate the value of hard work, ambition, and success. This party offers a home for all, regardless of their wealth or station in life. And we must welcome back our Republican and independent brothers and sisters who have felt forced away. We must empower those who feel hopeless, who have lost faith in finding a way up because they no longer see a place for themselves here. It’s time to make room for all who want to work toward a better future.

True leadership isn’t about talking louder; it’s about listening more deeply. We owe it to the people who have always stood by us—the street sweepers, the teachers, the farmers, the successful entrepreneurs, and everyone who works hard to build their community and this country.

It’s time to stop lying to ourselves and speak truth to ourselves. It’s okay to make a dollar the right way. There’s no shame in grinding and sweating to earn a good living. We should embrace the value of hard work and recognize it as the bedrock of a strong nation.

To move forward, we must ground ourselves in loyalty, truth, and love—in that order. Loyalty to our fellow Americans and to the challenges they face each day. Truth in our words, our actions, and our intentions. And, finally, love—love for each individual, whether we agree with them or not, and love for the communities that define us.

It’s time to clean house and rebuild on these principles. Loyalty, truth, and love—these values will guide us as we reclaim our purpose and create meaningful change. This is a new path rooted in respect, unity, and a commitment to every American who believes in us.

This party belongs to the people who have always stood by us. Let’s reclaim our mission, refocus on what truly matters, and remember that real progress comes from loyalty, truth, love, and a willingness to listen to the people. This is A New Way Forward.

    Election Day Story

I have exercised my right to vote in every presidential election since 1980. Never have I felt so unsettled leading up to the general election as I have this year. It seems counterintuitive then that when I opened an email from the Miami-Dade County Elections Department asking for volunteer poll workers, I answered almost immediately – Yes! For 20 years I covered elections as a television news reporter. This represented an opportunity to see the inner workings of the election process up close, and by participating in it, hopefully ease or at least distract my nerves.

My 1st surprise was that I needed to complete four hours of training ahead of election day. For what! I wondered. I hadn’t counted on devoting more than one day to the experience. I drove from my home in Coral Gables to the Miami Elks Lodge in South Miami and sat down next to a sweet older Hispanic woman who told me that she was volunteering to show her appreciation as a new US citizen. There were about 20 of us in the room, mostly women, and we were each given a rather thick training course manual. Somehow, we managed to get all the way through it in those four hours and even ran through a couple of roll-playing exercises to learn how to greet people, check their IDs, hand out the ballots (“Getting the Ballot Right!”), help them submit their ballots, and send them on their way. We spent a great deal of time learning how to treat people with disabilities respectfully, which I personally found edifying.

Then came my 2nd surprise: We needed to be at the precinct the day before election day to set everything up. That means the Privacy Booths, The DS200 machine (where the ballots are submitted), the Evid machines (where IDs are checked), and lots of other things. That added a third day to the experience. Yet it was the 3rd surprise that really got me: On election day, we would be working 14 ½ hours! What! I would need to report to the precinct at 5:30 am and would not be allowed to leave the premises (not even for lunch) until 8 pm at the earliest (Or until the ballots were finalized). Now I really had to think about it. Was this truly something I wanted to commit to? I could still get out of it – ‘Just say No!’

While I was still thinking about it, I got my 4th surprise: An email designating me as an Inspector and assigning me to Precinct 434 in a largely Hispanic neighborhood even though my application clearly stated that I do not speak Spanish. How would THAT work? As election day neared, I made the decision to go through with it, remembering the gratitude expressed by the woman who sat next to me in the training class. I was born in America. Shouldn’t I also express gratitude for being born into a free, democratic country that has provided me with so many opportunities?

When my alarm clock sounded at 4 am on November 5th, I did expressed gratitude – for having slept well the night before since I had a long day ahead. One of the volunteers with me was a woman who has volunteered in every election since 2007. She told us she had prayed a rosary for a safe and successful voting day the night before. Another volunteer said she had also prayed. We finished setting up all of the materials and the ballots that had been locked up the night before and opened the doors precisely at 7 am – and in came about 20 people ready to vote. I volunteered to oversee the Privacy Booths and guide voters in submitting their ballots. The best part, I came to discover, was handing out the coveted “I Voted” stickers.

The very first voter through was a Hispanic gentleman who, after handing him a sticker, surprised me by standing up straight and proclaiming, “I love America!” As the day progressed, several others made similar announcements when slapping on the sticker. “The United States is the best country in the world!” one man said joyfully. I soon realized just how seriously these voters took their civic responsibility to participate in the democratic process. I witnessed women motioning the Sign of the Cross before inserting their ballots. Parents came in with their children so that they could witness them voting. One couple brought with them the most adorable children, a sister and brother around 6 or 7 years old, dressed up in red, white, and blue. Adding to the spirit of the day, every time a new voter came through, all of the volunteers cheered and clapped! Not speaking Spanish turned out to be a non-issue since most of the voters spoke both English and Spanish, and whenever a language issue arose, there were several volunteers who spoke Spanish.

Not once, not in training, not on the set-up day, and never in the 14 ½ hours on election day, did any volunteer utter a candidate’s name nor mention a ballot measure. On the drive home, I realized that I had absolutely no idea how any of them voted.

While it was a loooong day, I absolutely cherish the experience. It was like an all-day Fourth-of-July parade filled with precious moments of national pride. I don’t think I will ever look at a ballot again in the same way. It’s taken on new meaning for me. I also gained confidence in the voting system after witnessing Miami-Dade County Elections employees set up, oversee, and then break down all of the equipment and carefully double-check the ballot numbers before dismissing us. It was done with clock-work precision and professionalism. Including training and the set-up day, I worked a total of 21 hours, for which I will get a check for $200.  I get to keep that plus hold in my heart forever a new perspective of what it means to be an American, whether by birth or naturalization, and why it’s so important never to take for granted our right and privilege to vote.

Univision Foundation announces new scholarship aimed at helping FIU’s first-generation students cross the finish line

As FIU joins thousands of colleges and universities across the nation this week in celebrating students who are among the first generation in their families to pursue bachelor’s degrees, Univision Foundation announced a new scholarship to bolster first-gen students as they work to finish their academic journey.

Set to launch at FIU’s National First-Generation College Celebration Day pep rally on Nov. 8, the Univision First-Generation Scholarship aims to ensure that financial difficulties do not inhibit a student’s potential to complete their studies and graduate on time.

Across the nation, more than 40.4 million people have completed some college but not earned a degree. A recent study conducted by Ipsos found that one-quarter of college students are at risk of stopping out or being dismissed from their institution – with their primary concern being cost of tuition. Among these students, those who are first-generation were more likely than their continuing-generation peers to consider leaving their program or were at risk of dismissal.

In addition to receiving financial support, Univision Scholars will be paired with a corporate mentor from TelevisaUnivision whose goal will be to equip them with the necessary tools to thrive after graduation.

“Univision Scholars is all about helping students succeed,” said Irisaida Mendez, Executive Director of Univision Foundation, emphasizing the program’s commitment to both academic and professional development. “It breaks generational cycles and gives new generations the support they need to finish their degrees.”

Teri Arvesu, senior vice president of Social Impact and Sustainability at TelevisaUnivision, expressed her enthusiasm: “As an FIU alum, I am proud to see that, with guidance from one of the most trusted brands among Hispanics in the U.S., Miami students can look forward to a brighter future.”

Applications for the Univision First-Generation Scholarship are currently open. Students may view the full criteria and apply by logging into Academic Works using their FIU credentials.

“Thanks to the generous philanthropic support of community partners like Univision Foundation, whose impact is tripled by a two-to-one matching program provided by the state of Florida, FIU can provide our trailblazing first-generation students the resources they need as they endeavor to cross the commencement stage,” said Phillip Lloyd Hamilton, Assistant Vice President for FIU Student Belonging & Support, which oversees First-Generation Initiatives.

Univision Foundation scholarship is one of a host of opportunities available to the nearly 15,000 FIU students who are among the first in their families to pursue bachelor’s degrees. In fact, for its holistic, university-wide first-gen initiatives, FIU is recognized as a standout among the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA)’s First-Gen Forward Network, a nationwide compendium of colleges and universities dedicated to this work.

In addition to scholarships, FIU’s first-generation college students have access to personalized success coaching and wraparound support to help them excel in their coursework, including dedicated academic and student development services offered by the Office of Student Access and Success. They can also explore federally funded TRIO programs – which are designed to uplift first-generation students as well as those from other socially, culturally and economically diverse backgrounds – such as Student Support Services and the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program.

Every year, FIU also hosts a week-long celebration honoring the achievements of first-generation students, alumni, faculty and staff. The goal is to help students learn about the services available to them as well as to connect with peers and potential mentors among their first-generation alumni, faculty and staff counterparts. Festivities this year included resource fairs, personal and professional development workshops, and networking receptions, culminating in a pep rally in Chapman Plaza on Friday.

Learn more about the opportunities and resources available by visiting the FIU First-Generation Initiatives website.
