Governor Ron DeSantis signs SB 1764 authored by Senator Jason Pizzo and co-sponsor Ileana García: Legislation to Strengthen Penalties for Street Racing Offenses

Democratic Senator Jason Pizzo prioritized safety this legislative session with bill CS/SB 1764 bill, with the bipartisan support of Republican Senator Ileana García, aimed at increasing penalties for violations related to street racing. The recently signed bill will raise the maximum fine for infractions related to illegal street racing, street takeovers, reckless driving, competitions, contests, tests, or exhibitions. Both Senators from Miami-Dade worked to strengthen regulations and address the dangers of street racing, which often result in tragic consequences on our major highways. Previously, these actions were difficult to penalize due to the lack of specific language in the law. SB 1764 will broaden the applicability of penalties for second violations of these prohibitions, as well as increase criminal penalties and fines for such offenses.

Furthermore, the bill will establish penalties for obstructing, hindering, or intentionally interfering with an authorized emergency vehicle that is in service and responding to an emergency while a person is engaged in illegal street racing, street takeovers, reckless driving, competitions, contests, tests, or exhibitions. The goal of the legislation is to address and deter reckless and dangerous racing behaviors, prioritizing public safety.

The effective date for the implementation of this legislation is scheduled for July 1, 2024.

FTC cracks down on fake online marketplace reviews

The last time you hired a plumber or bought a new television, how did you decide who to hire or which TV to buy? If you’re like most consumers today, you looked online for information, especially online reviews and testimonials. And businesses have clearly taken notice. It seems like you can’t buy anything or hire anyone without being asked to write a review, either by the business where you made the purchase or by a third party like Booking.com, Yelp or Google. With this explosion in the importance of online reviews, some businesses try to “game” the system by using deceptive and sometimes outright fraudulent practices to generate artificial positive reviews for themselves or to bomb competitors with false negative reviews. According to the Federal Trade Commission, these practices are now prevalent in the online marketplace. Amazon, alone, reported that it stopped more than 200 million suspected fake reviews in 2020. Google removed 95 million reviews from Google Maps in 2021 and millions more from its Google Play platform. Yelp found that as many as 19 percent of its online reviews were questionable. To combat this problem, the FTC proposed a new rule banning the most widely used deceptive online review practices. Among the proposed banned practices are: (i) writing, creating, selling, or purchasing fake or false consumer reviews and testimonials, or celebrity testimonials where the reviewer does not exist, the reviewer did not actually use the product or service of the business, or where the review falsely represents the reviewer’s actual experience with the product or service; (ii) buying positive or negative consumer reviews expressing a particular sentiment about the product or service; (iii) posting positive reviews written by a company’s officers, managers, employees or agents or any of their relatives without clearly disclosing the reviewer’s relationship to the business; and (iv) suppressing negative reviews through legal threats, physical threats, intimidation or false accusations. If the proposed rule is formally adopted, the FTC will have stronger enforcement mechanisms to stop these deceptive and fraudulent practices through civil monetary penalties and can recover actual losses on behalf of consumers that result from violations. If your business relies on online reviews and testimonials as part of your marketing efforts, you can review the complete proposed rule at https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2023/07/31/2023-15581/trade-regulation-rule-on-the-use-of-consumer-reviews-and-testimonials. And keep watch for the adoption of the final rule by checking for updates at www.ftc.gov.

Deering Estate Artist-in-Residence Spotlight: Jeanne Jaffe Exploring the Tapestry of Identity

Jeanne Jaffe is a 2024 Artist-in-Residence at Deering Estate. As a genuinely unique multidisciplinary artist, Jeanne Jaffe captivates audiences with her dynamic repertoire spanning installation, sculpture, drawings, and stop-motion animation. Her work, which delves into the intricacies of language, literature, psychology, and history, profoundly reflects on the construction of identity, the fabric of our world, and the scaffolding of our value systems.

Jaffe began her professional career studying archeology and anthropology, examining how people create and express meaning and values through objects, rituals, and behaviors. As Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts at the esteemed University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Jaffe’s influence extends far beyond the confines of her studio. Her five enriching years as a visiting artist at the Xian Academy of Fine Arts in China underscore her global impact and cross-cultural dialogue.

Jaffe’s exceptional artistic journey is marked by her innovative spirit and narrative prowess. She has garnered prestigious fellowship grants from the Gottlieb Foundation, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Independence Foundation, and the Leeway Foundation, among others. Her automatronic installation chronicling the life of Nicola Tesla, a testament to her technological approach to artmaking, earned her a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Her creative journey has also led her to hold an artist residency in Mino, Japan. She was awarded an Innovative Artist Fellowship from the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County and is currently an Artist-in-Residence at The Deering Estate. These accolades and recognitions have solidified her standing as a distinguished artist on the local and global stages, intriguing audiences with her unique perspective.

As a permanent resident of South Florida, Jaffe’s artistic journey continues to captivate audiences. Her solo exhibition at Spinello Projects in Miami, “Before I Wake,” is a testament to her enduring creativity and evolving vision. The exhibition showcases work that spans over three decades, inviting audiences to witness the evolution of her art and the depth of her creative exploration.

Much of Jaffe’s work creates a language that explores the realms of the unconscious and dream states, reconnecting people with their own interior experiences. Her work suggests new meanings created through metaphor, multiple associations, memory, and collective storytelling. Exploring how we form an identity, from the earliest pre-verbal stages of our lives through the introduction to language and cultural conditioning, motivates Jaffe to advocate for a deeper understanding of ourselves and others across cultures.

Jaffe’s artistic trajectory is celebrated and deeply revered with accolades from Art in America, The New York Times, and Sculpture Magazine. From LNS Gallery to the Coral Springs Art Museum, her work resonates with audiences across a spectrum of venues, inviting contemplation and dialogue. Her work inspires aspiring creatives and testifies to the boundless possibilities of the human imagination.

Since its inception, Jazz in the Heights has provided opportunities for 190 businesses to participate, including food trucks, party rentals, audiovisual services, nurseries, catering companies, clothing boutiques, jewelry shops, cosmetics retailers, public works firms, and artists.

McGhee’s small business support dates back to 2022 with the launch of the Small Business bootcamp initiative. In partnership with Tools for Change and Neighbors and Neighbors Association, Inc. (NANA), small businesses have annually been afforded the opportunity of a 4-week transformative experience, providing an intensive learning environment. To date the Small Business Bootcamp has paid startup funds for over 100 businesses, provided technical assistance to over 300 businesses and provided grants to 30 businesses.

The small business Boot Camp recipients graduate equipped with the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to navigate the complexities of starting and growing a successful business.  Sessions have included expertise in business planning, financial management, marketing, logistics and legal compliance.

McGhee sponsored the Supporting Safer Communities Program with a partnership between The Carrie Meek Foundation and Miami Dade County’s office of neighborhood safety.  The program passed unanimously from the Board of County Commissioners and Mayor Danielle Levine Cava to invest $8.9 million in the Community Violence Intervention Initiative to combat gun violence and increase safety across Miami-Dade.

McGhee’s small business enterprise programs have certified 344 small businesses with Miami-Dade County and awarded $15 million to small businesses in Miami Dade County.

Next weekend Miamians will enjoy Jazz in the Heights which has become a beloved tradition in the community, offering an evening of soulful music, delectable food, family-friendly fun, and some of the local small business vendors who have graduated from the bootcamp. Mayor Daniella Levine Cava Recognized as 2024 Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate

Collaboration, care unites leaders for Animal Services
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava

Today, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava‘s commitment to gun violence prevention and community safety has been acknowledged with the distinction of being named a 2024 Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate. This recognition serves as a testament to Mayor Daniella’s successful advocacy for gun safety measures and her dedication to governing with the safety of Miami-Dade County residents in mind. The Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction is a signal to supporters, volunteers, and voters that a candidate prioritizes gun violence prevention and will work tirelessly to ensure the safety of the community they serve.

“I am so proud to once again be recognized as a Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate,” says Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “I’ve made it my mission to reduce gun violence through community programs and initiatives, and thanks to our hard work, Miami-Dade has achieved one of the lowest rates of gun violence for any major metro area in the country. However, there is more work to be done, and together, we will continue to build a safer Miami-Dade.”

Since Mayor Daniella Levine Cava took office, Miami-Dade County has defied national trends in crime. Her leadership has kept our families safe and prevented gun violence through successful community programs such as the “Peace and Prosperity Plan” and “Operation Community Shield” — programs investing in job creation, internships and apprenticeships, community revitalization projects, and economic investments in housing, commercial, and business development.

Under our Mayor’s leadership, the Miami-Dade Police Department last year created a Crisis Response Unit (CRU) allowing mental health experts and clinicians to respond to nonviolent emergency calls. Mayor Levine Cava has continued to champion public safety efforts that have taken 3,000 illegal guns off our streets and created a youth employment program to provide paid work experience for youth in zip codes most impacted by gun violence.

Moms Demand Action is a nonpartisan grassroots movement of Americans fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence.
