City of Aventura celebrates 20 years of growth and accomplishment

FP_Evening View of Govt CtrIn 1995, residents of Aventura voted to incorporate, and the first Mayor, Commission, City Manager and department heads were soon overseeing this 3.2 sq. mile city that has become known as the “City of Excellence”.

Today, 20 years later, the City of Aventura has gained recognition in many arenas, including ranking fourth in a “Best Places for Young Families in Florida” survey. Families now flock to Aventura because it is a beautiful, safe city that has an A-rated charter school, ACES (Aventura City of Excellence School), an abundance of parks, a Community Recreation Center, sports and cultural activities, a state-of-the art cultural center and programs for the entire family.

Mayor Enid Weisman is joined by Aventura Commissioners Enbar Cohen, Teri Holzberg, Denise Landman, Marc Narotsky, Bob Shelley and Howard Weinberg and original City Manager Eric M. Soroka, in ensuring that Aventura remains a destination location for residents, businesses, travelers and shoppers. The City continues to offer residents the lowest tax rate in the County as well as incomparable amenities.

Julie Alm, Principal of The City’s charter school, ACES, sees young couples looking to settle in Aventura so their children can enroll in this award-winning K – 8 school. Their small class sizes ensure a strong teacher to student ratio and technology integration can be found in every classroom. With specialty classes such as

music, art, foreign language and even an in-house broadcasting system in every classroom, it’s no wonder there’s always a waiting list for enrollment.

The City’s award-winning Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, now entering its fifth year, is an elegant and intimate venue featuring a wide array of performances, ranging from concerts by international artists, such as this season’s performances by Art Garfunkel, Megan Hilty and Louise Pitre, to the Aventura Foreign Film Series and their Family Fun Series. Broadway, comedy and ballet, flamenco and folkloric dance fill the theatre each year, as well as the innovative educational programming for youngsters.

The Aventura Police Department, headed up by Chief Steven Steinberg, is a community-based department, and their 83 full-time officers, with 37 civilians and 15 volunteers, has earned an outstanding reputation in the law enforcement communities. The Department was recently reaccredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies and provides a full range of services including: SWAT Team, Dive Team, K-9 Officers, Marine Patrol and Honor Guard.

The City’s Founders’ Day is held every November and thousands of residents and guests turn out at Founders’ Park to enjoy a full day of fun activities like the zipline, rock climbing, trampoline and bungee jumping, as well as field games, arts and science stations, Toddler Town and their STAR Talent Showcase. Planning is underway for this year’s Founders Day scheduled for November 8.

But residents don’t have to wait until November to enjoy some of the best amenities in Florida. Every day, you can see people walking, jogging and rollerblading around the Don Soffer Exercise Trail, a 3.1 mile, a 10’ wide, paved ADA accessible exercise path encircling Turnberry Isle Resort that features an abundance of shade trees, lighting and chilled water fountains.

Or if you’re looking for water fun for the kiddies, look no farther than Founders’ Park Splash Pad……or if your favorite doggie needs to run around, check out the Waterways Dog Park. In a city of 3.2 sq. miles, there are six parks, all offering unique opportunities for exercise or just taking in the scenery.

Aventura is truly the City that has it all…..congratulations on your 20th anniversary!
