The 14th annual Day of Caring for Breast Cancer Awareness is scheduled for May 9 at the Intercontinental Hotel in downtown Miami. The day-long event is designed to educate, empower and give hope to people affected by breast cancer.
Each year the South Florida community gathers to celebrate the lives of women battling breast cancer. Educational sessions offer the latest information on breast cancer treatment, along with current information on maintaining a healthier lifestyle and encouragement for those concerned with preventing cancer and related diseases.
Medical professionals will host morning seminars on survivor stress management, reconstructive surgery, preventive nutrition and alternative treatments, as well as a discussion on the psychological after affects of breast cancer.
Breast cancer survivor/author Geralyn Lucas will be guest speaker. Diagnosed with breast cancer at 27, just after she landed her dream job at 20/20, Lucas wrote her memoir, Why I Wore Lipstick, an honest and courageous account of facing breast cancer. Her latest book, Then Came Life, is not just for cancer survivors, it is for life survivors.
Immediately following lunch, the Models of Hope fashion show will feature the not so typical runway models, but men and women who are survivors of breast cancer. NBC 6 anchor Roxanne Vargas will emcee the fashion show. “Day of Caring is designed to provide fresh ideas, thought provoking insights and the latest resources on breast cancer, how to prevent it, how to deal and live with it,” said event co-chair Lilia Garcia. “Those who attend will leave feeling inspired and invigorated.”
Presenting sponsors include Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida and Genentech. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and events continue until 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $65 in advance and $70 at the door.
