Sandy Baron Congratulations to Mr. Alex Gonzalez and the SMMCS Band Program. On Friday, April 9th, the SMMCS Band competed at the Fiesta-val Music Competition in Atlanta, Georgia. The Band was awarded “Grand Champions” with first place in Jazz and Concert Music.
Outstanding soloists in Concert were awarded to: Kyle Davison, for Baritone on “Amazing Grace” and Eric Gonzalez, for Trumpet on “Pictures at an Exhibition.”
Outstanding Soloists in Jazz were awarded to: Eric Gonzalez, for Flugel horn on “My Funny Valentine,” Oliver Jordan, for Guitar on “Sugar” and Franchesca Romero, for Piano on “Song for My Father.” Congratulations to Mr. Alex Gonzalez and the SMMCS Band Students who attended The Florida Bandmasters Association competition, February 19th. The band had its best showing to date and received the following awards: Ensemble Superior Ratings were awarded to: Jazz Band.
Solo Superior Ratings were awarded to: Daniel Bonce – Clarinet, Erika Lopez – Flute, Francesca Romero – Piano, Francesca Romero – Mallet and Sandra Taylor – Bassoon.
Trio Superior Ratings – Krysten Brenilla, Sydney Campagna and Erika Lopez Solo Excellent Ratings – Jesse Abella – Clarinet, Trevar Brown – Alto Sax and Bela Delgado – Oboe. Congratulations to Dr. Denning and the SMMCS Chorus. On April 30th they participated in the Florida Vocal Association (FVA) Music Performance Assessment. The students received three Superior Ratings and one Superior +++, which is highly unusual.
The students received Superiors in both Performance and Sight-reading.
Judges comments: “Powerful,” “Fantastic,” “Exciting sound and outstanding voices,” “Dynamic Singing,” “Really Grasped the heart of choral music,” “Are you sure you don’t have high school students in there?,” “7 Parts at the end?!!!”

Vocal Solo – 2nd Place Red Ribbon – Emily Pastrana.

Florida Federated is the only state level vocal competition for middle school. These students participated at the Regional Level last weekend. All the students who receive a superior rating are invited to participate at the state competition in Jacksonville, at the end of April. SMMCS will have the most students participating at the middle school level.

On Friday, April 9th, the SMMCS Orchestra competed at the Fiesta-val Music Competition in Myrtle Beach, Florida. The South Miami Middle Community School Concert Orchestra and String Sinfonia both received first place in their divisions. The orchestra also received the grand championship award for the overall middle school instrumental groups. A special congratulations to Hugo Belisario,
who received an outstanding musicianship award for his solo on Arabian Dreams. We wish to congratulate Ms. Nancy Handler and her photography students for their excellent showing at the Miami-Dade County Youth Fair & Exposition.
