It was an exciting November morning at the Coral Gables Women’s Club where 25 scholastic teams and their supporters packed the building for a spelling showdown. Schools from all over the region participated in the 10th annual Independent Schools of South Florida (ISSF) Spelling Bee, a highly competitive event for fifth grade students from Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.

Following hours of “edge of your seat” competition, St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School, located in Coral Gables, won the event. The winners were determined based on a point system as each school operated as a four-person team. St. Thomas team members included Jake Keller, Anna Sofia Lavernia, Sindhu Talluri and Mazie Solarz-Patel.

“I’m a very proud teacher,” said Niki Andreu, the students’ fifth grade teacher at St. Thomas. “They work hard every day in all they do.

They really deserved to win.”
