Congratulations to the Village of Palmetto Bay and the Town of Cutler Bay for teaming up to celebrate the July 4th holiday with a successful and spectacular event on America’s birthday. We hear that a record-breaking crowd of 7,000 turned out for the event at Palmetto Bay Village Hall featuring rides, music, fun and of course fireworks. Two hometown heroes who are currently serving overseas, U.S. Army Captain Josh Underwood, and Airman Eric Stern of the U.S. Air Force, were also recognized and honored as members of their families attended onstage. Also onstage with Palmetto Bay Mayor Karyn Cunningham were Cutler Bay Mayor Tim Meerbot and Council, Florida Representative Vance Aloupis, State Senator Jose Javier Rodriguez, State Representative Javier Fernandez, Miami-Dade District 8 Councilwoman Daniella Levine-Cava, and School Board Member District 9 Dr. Larry Feldman.
Mayor Cunningham and Council presented former Palmetto Bay Mayor Shelley Stanczyk with a proclamation, thanking her for founding this event in 2014. This year’s sponsors were The Town of Cutler Bay, Daniella Levine Cava, The Collection, South Motors, The Corradino Group, Sacyr, Christ Fellowship-Palmetto Bay, Doral Automotive Group, Miami Acura, Florida Power & Light, Palmetto Station, Marlin Engineering, The Estate Companies, Westminster Christian School, Preferred Claim Solutions, Sunstate Bank, New Leaf Chiropractic, Gerdts Realty Group, Lehtinen-Schultz Attorneys, Shag Dixie LLC and special thanks to the Miami-Dade County Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.
Be sun-safe this summer! Fun in the sun is great, but when you’re on the beach or anywhere outdoors there’s a greater risk of skin cancer. Here are some suggestions from The Skin Cancer Foundation: Cover up: Sarongs, long sleeves, wraps and umbrellas will shade your skin and help keep you cool. Clothing is the first line of defense against the sun’s rays. All About the Accessories: Protect your eyes and surrounding skin with UV-blocking sunglasses and wear a broad-brimmed hat to help protect your scalp, neck, face and ears. Made In the Shade: Avoiding the sun during the most intense hours – between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., will save your skin, so find a large tree or beach umbrella if you must be outdoors in the morning and afternoon.
Screen Time: Water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 is best for extended time outdoors. Apply 2-3 tablespoons every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating heavily. Correction! In the previous issue of The Palmetto Bay News and Cutler Bay News we ran a story about Katherine Magnoli, who is the author of a series of children’s books about bullying, featuring a young wheel-chair bound superhero named KatGirl. Those books have been well received and Magnoli has made a number of appearances at schools in the area. Magnoli’s new book is Pete the Private Eye, part of a totally new and different series exploring the detective adventures of a boy who is blind. That’s explained in the story, but the order of the words in the headline made it sound as if her new book is another in the KatGirl series, which it is not. Our apologies for any confusion this may have caused. The Adventures of KatGirl books are available through Amazon.com and the new book will likely be there soon. For information or autographed copies contact the author Katherine Magnoli at katmagnoli@gmail.com or call 305-931-0759.
