Coach Jill Ellis, a Palmetto Bay resident, led the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team to victory in Lyon, France, beating the Netherlands, 2-0, and winning the 2019 Women’s World Cup title on July 7.
Ellis is the first woman to coach World Cup teams to back-to-back championships and is unbeaten in 11 Women’s World Cup games. She was head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team that won against Japan at the World Cup in 2015.
Always modest, she credits her players.
“This team showed their world-class talent as well as a tremendous amount of resiliency,” Ellis said, when contacted on July 8. “I am honored to coach these great players who are even better people.”
Originally from England, Ellis is a naturalized U.S. citizen and has been living in the United States since her father, John Ellis, relocated the family here. With her second World Cup win behind her, Ellis is expected to be honored by the Village of Palmetto Bay during a special event in September, according to village officials.
