New Year’s resolutions…it’s better to keep them simple

Getting ready to make your New Year’s resolutions for 2020? Some people don’t even bother anymore, and even for those who do it’s usually hard to follow through and actually succeed. All the experts we’ve heard from suggest that if you want a better success ratio, don’t make grandiose resolutions that are going to be hard to keep because they’re unrealistic. Pick small goals that you can tackle one day at a time, whether it involves health and fitness, job goals or other matters. And if you want some good tips and information regarding health and fitness, be sure and take a look through our own publication, Inspire Health, which can be found online at https://communitynewspapers.com/category/inspire-health/, at our office and in many doctors’ offices.

Well folks, as the holiday season winds down it pays to keep a few things in mind. For those of you doing last minute shopping (and we know that some of you are) remember to take the recommended safety precautions in crowded stores and parking lots, since ‘tis the season for pickpockets and thieves as well. Be aware of your surroundings and don’t leave purchased items visible inside your cars and SUV’s when you go back in to do more shopping or make stops along the way (or even in front of your house!).

Also, when driving, put that cell phone down. Talking or texting while driving is never safe, and driving during the holidays takes on some added risks. And if you’re going to parties where alcohol is served, which is likely this time of year, try to have a designated driver or call for a safe ride home. Losing a friend or loved one due to a DUI accident is always a tragedy, but it’s a sadness more keenly felt during the holidays.

Both Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay have had their State of the Village/Town Addresses now, and both were great events affording an opportunity for residents to get together and a recap of what’s taken place during the past year, as well as a look ahead for plans and goals. Kudos to both cities’ officials and staff for putting together those events.

11th Annual Chili Day in Cutler Bay, the annual chili cook-off is coming up on January 25 at Cutler Ridge Park, so chefs, get your favorite chili, salsa and cornbread recipes ready for the Town’s Eleventh Annual Chili Day in Cutler Bay Cook-Off. Cash Prizes will be awarded in all three categories and for Best Decorated Booth and People’s Choice. Live music will be provided by Cutler Bay’s hometown band Cutler Stew. There’s always lots of entertainment, food and fun for the whole family! Update about the Coral Reef Park Footbridge—Palmetto Bay’s Coral Reef Park is getting a new footbridge, according to village staff. “Crews installed barriers around the area on the north side of the canal on the first day of work on December 5th.The barriers will remain in place until the job is complete. Construction will be suspended on December 24th and 25th, as well as December 31st and January 1st. Barriers will be set up on the south side when crews mobilize equipment there, which is expected at the end of December, or right after the New Year. The barriers will not block any of the existing paths. Working hours are typically 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.” The project is set to wrap up in September of 2020.

Note: Municipal Offices will be closed on Tuesday, December 24, and Wednesday December 25 2019 for Christmas Eve and Christmas.
