Working for You: A Recap of Commission Meeting

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Dear Friends and Residents of District 8,

Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins

As we begin the month of October, it is important to note that it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This month, we honor the fighters, celebrate the survivors, and remember all those who have been affected. 1 in 8 women will experience a battle with Breast Cancer and early detection is vital.

We are continuing to pray for our Governor’s wife, Casey DeSantis, on her recent diagnosis with breast cancer. She is not the only the First Lady, but she is also a mom and a woman fighting a very serious battle. Please join me in keeping her in your thoughts and prayers.

The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners (BCC) held a meeting with a full agenda. We accomplished several important items for District 8 and Miami-Dade County. Below are a few of the key items accomplished on your behalf at today’s BCC meeting:

Unlicensed Practice of Immigration Law
Many are being charged exorbitant fees in our County by notaries holding themselves out as attorneys providing unauthorized immigration services. I am thankful to my colleagues for their unanimous support of my ordinance prohibiting the unlicensed practice of immigration law, requiring clarifying language in the advertisements and signage of notaries offering immigration services and requiring steep fines for violations. I am proud to now have this ordinance in place and I am proud to protect our community from fraud.

South Dade Trail
South Dade deserves an Underline-type asset and today, the Board passed both my resolutions that relate to my goal of creating the South Dade Trail- a twenty-mile pedestrian/bicycle shared use path that runs alongside the South Dade Transitway that is aesthetic, well-lit, fully landscaped and filled with recreational rest stops. I will keep you updated as my efforts toward this important project progress.

Affordable Housing Pilot Program
It is clear across the county, but specifically in District 8, that affordable housing is a huge problem. Today, the Board passed my resolution that directs the Administration to explore an affordable housing pilot program in District 8 that would allow for the installation of manufactured modular homes on county-owned property. This is an innovative first step to tackling our housing crisis.
