Job Corps National Director, Rachel Torres, visited Miami Job Corps Center (MJCC) on November 4, 2021 to discuss the new IUPAT (International Union of Painters and Allied Trades) Glaziers trade coming soon to MJCC. Torres toured the Center, paying particular attention to the on-site construction project that will soon become the Glaziers’ bay/workshop. Meeting with Torres, from the IUPAT were from Lawrence Burgess, IUPAT National Project Coordinator and Todd R. Langlois, IUPAT Technical Assistance Coordinator together with Eric Howard, IUPAT-Job Corps Southeastern Region Field Coordinator. Burgess stated “Miami Job Corps Center is a beautiful and well-run Center. The IUPAT Glaziers program is glad to be affiliated with the staff and students at the Center. We look forward to our future working together and giving the youth the tools they need to get ahead.” Peni Webster-Lewis, Regional Director, Atlanta Region, Office of Job Corps was also on Center as part of the collaborative efforts.
“This is a great time to add a new Glazing Pre-Apprenticeship trade to our current offerings of IUPAT’s Painting, UBC’s Carpentry, HBI’s Building Construction Technology and HBI’s Advanced Electrical training programs. We are pleased to have this collaboration from the US Dept. of Labor, National Job Corps, IUPAT and MJCC. We were honored to have them visit our Center and look forward to hosting them again soon” stated Mary Geoghegan, MJCC Center Director.
Administered by the U.S. Department of Labor, Job Corps seeks to teach low-income, at-risk youth ages 16-24, the academic and vocational skills they need to secure meaningful and lasting employment. Hands-on Career Technical Training, Work Based Learning and Apprenticeship jobs with a promising future await MJCC student prospects who choose the Pre-Apprenticeship programs.
National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) is November 15-21. MJCC is recognizing NAW by featuring our graduates’ success stories as Apprentices, Journeymen and soon-to-be Foremen. Lesly Diaz, MJCC Career Transition Specialist, compiled these success stories into a 28-page Commemorative Newsletter Issue.
