When it comes to Coral Gables High School athletics, Harold Cole has seen it all and done it all. A 1965 graduate of Coral Gables High, Cole was a multi sport athlete. He was a member of back-to-back state and national championship football teams in 1963 and 1964 coached by the legendary Nick Kotys. Those Gables teams often played at the Orange Bowl including the legendary rivalry with Miami High in front of 30,000 to 40,000 fans. He also was a member of the basketball team.
But Cole’s greatest contributions to Coral Gables High would come later. After earning an undergraduate degree from the University of Miami, he later returned to the school as a teacher, assistant coach in both football and basketball. He also had a stint as the school’s basketball coach. But he was best known as the school’s athletic director 25 years. Over the years, he’s seen many great student athletes and teams come through the school including the Colzie brothers, Frank Gore, Mike Lowell, Jonathan Vilma, Mike Fiore, Jim Maler, Tracy Kerdyk, Billy Rolle, Rodney Bellinger and so many others.
