Aventura residents Sherry Schaeffer, 75, and Susan Shovers, 80, had dreams of having celebrity status, and while they never did get to walk the red carpet, they are now getting their moment in the spotlight, thanks to retirement at Vi at Aventura.
With the support of the Vi, Schaeffer and Shovers created the weekly program ‘A La Vie at the Vi’ (To Life at the Vi), as a way to stay connected to their fellow residents during the pandemic. The program airs on the community’s in-house television station and has evolved into the community’s most entertaining way to stay in the know, featuring, as the pair say at the start of each episode, “all the news and views that you can use.”
“This has been an exciting journey for us,” said Schaeffer. “To think, what started as a fun way to connect with fellow residents, has now become one of the greatest highlights of my retirement.”
The women have since become well-respected, award-winning community correspondents and have interviewed such South Florida mainstays as Aventura’s Chief of Police Michael Bentolila and Sun-Sentinel’s Jewish Journal Editor Al Goch. When Vi at Aventura recently hosted its ‘Meet the Candidates’ Event featuring Howard Weinberg, Aventura’s mayoral candidate, and City Commission candidates Amit Bloom, Paul Kruss and Michael Stern, it was no surprise that the retirement community tapped the dynamic duo to emcee the event. Schaeffer and Shovers directed questions to the candidates up for election on November 8, who addressed concerns, shared their plans on how they will serve the community, and discussed what’s on the horizon for the city’s future.
“I’ve always loved politics but emceeing this event has sparked my interest in exploring Aventura in new ways, attending City Council meetings and getting more involved,” said Shovers.
