Summer is nearing its end and the hardworking women of the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) and their sister clubs in District 11 continue to help fund their outreach efforts with ongoing events.
In fact, the CGWC held the club’s inaugural game night hosted by Bay 13 on Aug. 23, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Coral Gables. This event is scheduled the fourth Tuesday of each month and look for more on that in future issues.
Next up on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 7-9 p.m., the CGWC will hold its Gringo Bingo fundraiser at Clutch Burger. They will share proceeds for that event with the National Areata Alopecia Foundation (NAAF). This is the third time Gringo Bingo proceeds will benefit NAAF since this fun bingo party started in 2019, when the club first worked with immigration attorney Dierdre Nero to support her efforts in raising awareness and funds for NAAF.
Steven Bradley will emcee again with celebrity DJ Germain providing music to make the party complete. RSVP to gloria@cnews.net.
By the way, Dierdre Nero was a guest on Gloria’s Gab LIVE on August 17, to discuss NAAF and the upcoming Gringo Bingo for which her Nero Immigration Law Firm is one of the sponsors. Tickets are $30 per person and include 12 games and a big coverall with great prizes and lots of fun. To RSVP email gloria@cnews.net.
In fundraising efforts, Steven Tonkinson continued his quest to make a difference in the lives of untold numbers with his work volunteering for Shelter Box USA. When he is not helping clients at Tonkinson Financial in Coconut Grove, he is traveling to natural disasters to deliver Shelter Boxes or raising money to support the effort.
Always looking for a unique way to do so, for a second time he climbed Mount Snow Basin in Utah for the Everesting Challenge, a 29,029 feet hike in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains — the equivalent height of Mount Everest — in just 36 hours. Steven’s goal was to raise $29,029 and he added an additional challenge this year by completing the climb with the big green Shelter Box strapped to his back as he did at running the annual Miami Marathon.
Steven is an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables whose members have shown great support as have so many in the community. Readers who would like to help Steven’s fundraising efforts may do so by going to www.shelterboxusa.org/everesting-challenge/.
On the cultural front, Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre brings us another great show, the world premiere of Now and Then by Sean Grennan whom you may recall wrote Making God Laugh, The Tin Woman, and Married Alive. Now and Then is an inspiring story of love and life of a young aspiring pianist who is working as a bartender. On closing one night, he gets an unusual request. A late desperate customer offers him and his girlfriend $2,000 to sit and have a drink with him and what follows is both funny and touching.
This production, directed by the talented David Arisco, is running through Sept. 11 with performances: Wednesday-Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m. To reserve tickets, visit www.actorsplayhouse.org.
GableStage also has a new production that sounds intriguing, Fade by Tanya Saracho. This is a witty dramatic comedy that tells a tale of friendship, opportunity, assumptions, ambition, culture and betrayal. The play is directed by Teo Castellanos and runs through to Sept. 18. For tickets, call 305-445-1119.
With the start of school and return of everyone from summer vacations, there are numerous opportunities to get back out there to support favorite causes, attend networkers, fall sports and help our small business community. October brings us the Rotary Club of Coral Gables Chili Cook Off on Oct. 30. There is a call out to chefs and sponsors for the fun family event that will give kids and adults a chance to wear their Halloween attire should they want to enter the costume contest. For info visit www.chilichillin.com.
Also, Profit Inc., the oldest business networking group in South Florida, is a dynamic group of business leaders who meet the first Thursday of each month for lunch at 94th Aero Squadron and then on the third Thursday of the month for a Power Lunch at Season’s 52 in Coral Gables.
The group will be electing a new president to follow LaWanda Loftus, of 1st Citizens Bank, as well as their board of directors at their Sept. 1 meeting. Those interested in building their business should check out this organization by visiting www.profitinc.org.
Finally, save dates for just a few upcoming events: Coco Plum’s Annual Tea Party at their clubhouse will be held Aug. 31, from 2 to 4 p.m.; A Safe Haven for Newborn Gala is set for Oct. 22, Hilton Downtown Miami; Coral Gables Woman’s Club Halloween Party is scheduled for Oct. 29 at clubhouse, 1009 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd.; Leukemia & Lymphoma Walk set for Nov. 12, at Maurice Ferrer Park; the Alzheimer’s Walk on Nov. 19 at FIU-Ricardo Silva Stadium, and Smartride on weekend of Nov. 18 -20, a 165-mile bicycle ride ending in Key West.
Until next time, keep making each day count and share an act of kindness every day.
