SFYS to honor MDC North’s Vazquez at fundraising gala
Fermin Vazquez

Miami Dade College’s North Campus president Fermin Vazquez, with over 24 years of leadership experience in public higher education, Miami-Dade County’s Public Schools system and the private sector, will be honored by the Emmy and Gold Medal Award-winning South Florida Youth Symphony during a fundraising gala, Oct. 28, at the Miami Shores Country Club, 10000 Biscayne Blvd.

The costume gala and auction, to benefit the 59-year-old organization’s ongoing mission of empowering young musicians, begins with a 6-7 p.m. cocktail hour, followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The evening’s “Peter Pan” theme is “Join Us in Neverland.”

SFYS president Jake Monk and the Magic City Jazztet, one of South Florida’s most popular groups, will perform during the cocktail hour. After dinner cabaret entertainment will feature jazz artists Lisanne Lyons and John Hart.

“This costume gala will be a night to remember,” said Marjorie Hahn SFYS executive and music director. “And honoring a great educator, community leader and long-time Youth Symphony supporter, Fermin Vazquez, makes the evening even that more special.”

The SFYS, one of the nation’s leading youth music organizations, has been based at the Pawley Creative Arts Center on the Miami Dade College North Campus for the past 27 years. The SFYS’ Summer Music Academy also takes place on the Miami Dade North Campus.

In addition to supporting the South Florida Youth Symphony’s ongoing music programs, a portion of the funds raised from the event will help the SFYS — which is comprised mainly of students from low income and underserved households in North Miami Dade and South Broward counties — provide scholarships and instruments for kids.

Individual tickets are $150 and a limited number of gala sponsorships are available at the Prelude ($1,800), Intermezzo ($2,800) and Fortissimo ($5,000) level. The Fortissimo level includes a table for 10 and a private concert at a residence or business event.

To purchase tickets or sponsorships, contact the South Florida Youth Symphony at 305-238-2729.
