In the heart of The Palace Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, an oasis has blossomed under the watchful care of resident Felipe Colon, a former landscape artist. His green thumb, honed over a lifetime, has found a new canvas within the community, creating a haven of beauty and tranquility.
“Upon moving to The Palace, he shared his love of landscaping, and we thought dedicating a special garden within our community was a great way for him to continue this passion while creating a sense of independence,” said Director of Activities Debbie Horvitz. “It’s important that people feel valued, regardless of age.
The octogenarian spends 3-4 hours per day tending to the garden, including trimming shrubs, watering plants and mulching. For Colon, this daily ritual is more than a chore; it’s a connection to nature that has been with him since childhood.
“I’ve always felt close to nature,” he explained. “I appreciate its beauty and feel happy and peaceful outdoors.”
He feels a sense of purpose in being able to continue this lifelong hobby. Originally from Puerto Rico, he relocated to Miami from New Jersey, where he worked for a lab company, tending to the grounds.
Horvitz says Colon began by growing tomatoes in planting boxes during the pandemic before expanding to the garden. The Palace provides all the tools and materials he requests, such as shears and shovels, to create his meticulous, well-maintained landscaping. For the holiday season, he even added poinsettias, much to the delight of his neighbors.
“He’s more than a resident; he’s a valued member of our community,” said Horvitz. “The garden gives him a reason to get up every morning, and that enthusiasm is contagious.”
In addition to beautifying The Palace, research shows Colon is reaping a wealth of health benefits. Studies cited by the National Institutes of Health found older adults who report having a sense of purpose experienced fewer chronic health conditions. Plus, being in nature also positively impacts mental, physical and emotional health.
“I’m very happy to continue the hobbies I enjoyed before I moved to The Palace,” he said. “I want the community to look beautiful because this is my home.”
When he’s not gardening, Colon enjoys playing dominoes with friends. He also looks forward to the many outings to South Florida attractions planned by Horvitz.
“We strive to create opportunities for residents to continue pursuing what brings them joy,” added Horvitz. “His journey is a reminder that age should never be a barrier to purpose.”
