New single and video for “Chunk” to debut at Skatebird in Miami September 20, followed by a performance at Margaritaville Hollywood Beach September 25
Award-winning Miami-based Latin funk “fusionistas” Electric Piquete will finally deliver on a promise set some time ago. The band is preparing to release a full-length recording of new and mostly instrumental music and plans to celebrate throughout the Miami-Dade and Broward in the days immediately after.
Azabache will be released digitally on all platforms September 20, with a video premiere for the first single “Chunk”, a mid-tempo funk number mixed by Grammy-winning producer and engineer Carlos “El Loco” Bedoya (Beyoncé, Mick Jagger, Enrique Iglesias), and CD release party to take place that night at Skatebird (533 NE 83rd St, Miami, FL 33138). The video, which will stream from the band’s YouTube page, was directed and edited by Christopher Tijerino from CR38TE MEDIA. No cover, all ages welcome, event begins at 8 p.m.
The word Azabache means black amber or jet and finds its origins in the Andalusian parts of Spain. Its value and use as a jewelry piece trace back to ancient Rome, and modern use to Cuban culture, where it is used to ward off negative energies. Azabaches are also said to protect wearers from fear, indecisiveness, and evil.
Next, the band returns to the bandshell at Margaritaville Hollywood Beach (1111 N Ocean Dr, Hollywood, FL 33019) for a 7 to 9 p.m., free and all ages performance on Wednesday, September 25. Electric Piquete’s new album will be available for purchase at each show for $15. High resolution photos of the band and the album cover are available here.
“The new album is meant to be a musical azabache, a salve for what ills our world, a statement of joy and groove put forth in the universal language of music,” says Michael Mut, band co-founder, bassist and album executive producer. “We hope to provide listeners with a temporary escape from the mortal realm, and an invitation to the spiritual.” The band is independently issuing the recording that features 10 total tracks.
Album standouts include the up-tempo Latin groove of “Guayabera” (also mixed by Bedoya), “Muevete Con Ganas”, a collaboration featuring the vocals and lyrical contributions of Miami-based singer / songwriter MannySwagg, and “Timeless Faith”, which puts congero Raymond Ayala and his smooth Spanish rap flow front and center.
The CD version of the release will contain a bonus track, a cover of the Badfinger track “Matted Spam”, which was originally issued in 2023 on the Y&T Music compilation Shine On: a Tribute to Pete Ham.
Formed in the summer of 2007, Electric Piquete is a two-time Miami New Times Best of Miami “Best Latin Band” award-winning Latin funk outfit. Their influences are as diverse as the Miami region that birthed them, ranging from rock to jazz spiced with everything in between: funk, Afro-Caribbean, progressive and R&B.
Though mostly instrumental, the band does feature vocals and rapping on several numbers; a tight rhythm section and heavy percussion supports melodious horn play.
