In recognition of the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, Jewish National Fund-USA partnered with the Consulate General of Israel in Miami and several schools and synagogues in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties to honor 9/11 victims, survivors, and the firefighters, police officers, and other first responders who rushed into the burning buildings to save lives on that infamous day, as well as the local heroes in South Florida who risk their lives protecting and serving our communities daily.

As the leading nonprofit organization for the land and people of Israel, representatives from Jewish National Fund-USA and the Consulate General of Israel in Miami organized ten 9/11 ceremonies in the tri-county area to educate the next generation about the terrorist attacks that forever changed our nation, while reaffirming the shared values cherished by the people of the United States and Israel.

“Twenty-three years ago, terrorists attacked the United States, and the country was forever changed,” said Zohar Vloski, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Israel Defense Forces Reserves and Jewish National Fund-USA’s Global Executive Director of Zionist Education. “We will always remember the tragedy but will also never forget the heroes who emerged – both civilians and those whose life’s work was helping others.”

Students of all ages attended the ceremonies, which took place at Temple Beth Am, Hebrew Academy RASG, Samuel Scheck Hillel Community Day School, Lehrman Community Day School, Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus, David Posnack Jewish Day School, Donna Klein Jewish Academy, and Katz Hillel Day School.

At several of the events, representatives from local fire and police departments, including the Miami Beach Fire Department, Florida International University Police Department, and first responders in Aventura and Boca Raton, were presented with a plaque featuring Jewish National Fund-USA and KKL-JNF’s 9/11 Living Memorial in Jerusalem—the only commemorative site of its type outside of the U.S. that lists all the names of those who perished on 9/11.

Established in 2009, the monument pictured in the photograph — an American flag waving and transforming into a flame of liberty and hope with a base that includes a piece of metal from the ruins of the Twin Towers — is a testament to the deep connection between the State of Israel and the U.S., and our countries’ shared values of peace, religious tolerance, democracy, freedom, resilience, and fighting terrorism.

“We truly appreciate having the children here to join us in the solemn observance of those who perished on September 11, 2001,” said Miami Beach Fire Department Deputy Chief Juan Ramón Mestas. “It is supremely important that future generations remember this day. We are honored to receive the plaque to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of that sad day in our nation’s history.”

Additionally, Jewish National Fund-USA partnered with other local Jewish organizations, including Hillel at Florida International University (FIU) and Students Supporting Israel at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), to host 9/11 ceremonies at the college campuses. Through this collaboration, students who value the sanctity of human life, tolerance, and Western values united to honor 9/11 victims and oppose terrorism. The events also recognized campus police for protecting students throughout the year.

The event at FIU featured remarks provided by United States veteran Segundo Pico, who was representing Heroes to Heroes Foundation, a Jewish National Fund-USA-supported organization whose mission is to address the unseen moral injury, guilt, and shame of combat veterans by fostering reconnection to faith, rebuilding hope, revealing purpose, and guiding them toward belonging and peace. One of the ways they do this is by taking the vets on a trip to Israel that catapults their healing journey. During their time in Israel, they visit many holy and healing sites, including the Jewish National Fund-USA 9/11 Memorial.

Jewish National Fund-USA also hosted its annual 9/11 commemoration ceremony at the 9/11 Living Memorial in Jerusalem, which was attended by U.S. Marines, the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Israeli firefighters, American police officers, and diplomats, as well as American students from Alexander Muss High School in Israel, Young Judea, new American immigrants to Israel, and Israelis from communities bordering Gaza and Lebanon.
