Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute will commemorate the 10th anniversary of its adult heart transplant program with a reunion between transplant recipients and the caregivers that impacted their lives. Nearly 150 individuals have received hearts to date, and this event provides an opportunity to reconnect with their clinicians.
The program will also allow those awaiting transplant surgery to hear firsthand from those who have been where they are now and are thriving following surgery.
Maria Cattani returned to traveling and producing an environment-focused podcast after her December 2023 transplant; Portia Brown has had both a heart and kidney transplanted at Memorial within the last year; Karenine Chery had her surgery in October, 2023 and returned to her career as a nurse at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.
These individuals and others will be available to share their remarkable stories of survival, as will physicians and other clinicians that provided care. Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute administrators can also offer perspective on the last decade of life-saving care and the future of ‘total heart’ care in South Florida.
WHEN: Monday, February 17, 2025 (program – 3:00-5:00 p.m.; media availability – 2:30 p.m.)
WHERE: Memorial Regional Hospital conference center (west of hospital’s main entrance) 3501 Johnson Street, Hollywood
In 2014, Memorial was the first in Broward County to perform an adult heart transplant, enabling even the most medically-complex, cardiac patients to receive life-saving care close to home (the story of that first patient is here). The program has grown considerably since that time, with 43 individuals transplanted in 2024 alone.
Memorial Cardiac & Vascular Institute is a cardiovascular care leader, offering a wide array of services dedicated to the prevention, detection, treatment and rehabilitation of heart and vascular conditions, including cardiology, electrophysiology, adult congenital heart disease, heart failure, heart surgery and heart transplant. Its combination of extraordinary medical expertise, advanced technology, and exacting quality guidelines deliver the best possible outcomes for those receiving care tailored to their specific needs.
Part of Memorial Healthcare System, the cardiac and vascular institute is South Florida’s only Comprehensive Care Center accredited by the Adult Congenital Heart Association. For more information on total heart care, visit them at
