Miami scored eight runs in the sixth inning, securing its sixth straight victory with a 15-2 win over the Lafayette Cougars. AJ Ciscar recorded his second win of the season, tying career highs with nine strikeouts and hitting four batters. He pitched six solid innings, allowing only two runs on five hits. In the sixth, James Dorn, along with relievers Michael Fernandez and Erick Peralta, finished the game without allowing any runs or hits.
It has been confirmed that Max Galvin underwent foot surgery yesterday and is expected to be out of action for approximately six weeks. Fabio Peralta will step in for him in left field. Additionally, Vance Sheahan suffered a strain and is likely to miss this series and potentially the midweek game against FAU. We hope he will return for the Florida series next Friday. Tonight, Jake Ogden shifted from second to shortstop, and Jailen Watkins was called up to play second.
After a scoreless first inning, Derek Williams, who has been on a tear at the plate, started the second with a double. This set the stage for a three-run inning, fueled by RBI singles from Brylan West and Jake Ogden, and Alonzo Alvarez scoring on a fielder’s choice induced by Fabio.
The Cougars responded in the third inning with two doubles, narrowing the gap to two runs—the closest they would get to the Canes. In the fourth inning, the Canes added three additional runs, extending their lead to five. Lafayette’s starting pitcher was replaced after Fabio singled with one out, stole second base, and scored on Jake’s second hit of the game. Soon after, two walks loaded the bases, ending the outing for their starter. The reliever struggled, issuing another walk and then a fourth consecutive walk, which brought the score to 6-1.
The Cougars chipped away at the lead in the 6th inning with a single, two hit batters, and an RBI double. In response to their one run, Miami countered with eight, sending 14 batters to the plate. Jake started the inning with his third hit of the night, a single, and was followed by two walks to load the bases. This set the stage for Alex Sosa’s grand slam home run to deep left field, 368 feet away. Miami then reloaded the bases on a hit batter, a single, and a walk. Fabio walked for the fifth run, Jake was hit for the sixth, and the inning ended with Daniel and Alex drawing walks for runs seven and eight.
Being Lafayette’s first game of the season, it was decided not to declare the Mercy Rule for a ten-run differential after seven innings. With the score already at 14-2 at the end of six frames, Miami finished strong in the seventh, with Dylan Dubovik hitting his first home run of the season, sailing to the right of the scoreboard 415 feet.
The Miami hitters continued their strong performance, tallying 12 hits en route to a 15-2 victory. Jake Ogden highlighted the offense with a 3-for-4 effort and three RBIs. Nonetheless, Alex Sosa outshined him with six RBIs, including a grand slam—the fourth home run of his season. Dylan Dubovik also struck his first home run, while Derek Williams added his fifth double of the season.
Miami continues its six-game schedule this week with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 2 PM, featuring Rob Evans in his first start of the year. The second game will follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first. Lazaro Collera will pitch the second half of the doubleheader.
