Iranian director Panah Panahi makes his striking feature debut with Hit the Road presented as part of the Aventura International Film Series at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center on Tuesday, December 13 at 7:30 p.m.
This charming, sharp-witted and deeply moving comic drama takes the tradition of the Iranian road-trip movie and adds unexpected twists and turns. It follows a family of four as they drive across the Iranian countryside to drop their older son off at the border in order to leave the country. Over the course of the trip, they bond over memories of the past, grapple with fears of the unknown, and fuss over their sick dog. Despite the ebullient presence of their younger son, unspoken tensions arise and risks involving the elder son’s flight become increasingly evident as the family approaches its destination.
Not rated, Hit the Road is shown in Persian with English subtitles. Among its honors, the film was named “Best Film” at the BFI London Film Festival and received the audience and critics’ awards at the Luxembourg City Film Festival while Panahi received the Golden Gate Award as best new director from the San Francisco International Film Festival.
The New York Times reported “In real life, you might not want to be stuffed into a car with these people — and let’s not forget their dog, Jesse — on a dusty stretch of Iranian highway, but from the first jokey moments of Hit the Road until its heartbreaking end you will not want to be anywhere else.”
Admired film expert Shelly Isaacs curates the series and hosts each film with an introduction and a post-screening discussion.
The Aventura International Film Series continues with Lost Illusions (Jan. 10), Petite Maman (Feb. 7) and three yet-to-be-announced films (March 7, April 4 and May 16).
