Known Agenda ridden by jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. wins Curlin Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park
What a magnificent day that Saturday, March 27th turned out to be! The weather was perfect—in the low 80s—and not a hint of rain to dampen the spirit of nearly 2,000 Thoroughbred race fans—a sold-out event—onsite who were eager to enjoy the Curlin Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. Since 2005, this premier race featuring three-year-old Thoroughbreds is held at Gulfstream Park, five weeks before the Kentucky Derby.
The Florida Derby brings the winner another step closer on the road to the Triple Crown.
New champion Known Agenda ridden by jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. took his place in the Winner’s Circle to beat out other favorites such as Greatest Honour and Spielberg. Known Agenda took the lead and pulled away for a 2 ¾ -length victory in the $750,000 Grade 1 race.
Known Agenda was trained by Todd Pletcher, one of the world’s foremost trainers who began working with horses as a kid. Pletcher has not only succeeded in becoming Thoroughbred racing’s all-time leading trainer in purses earned at $354 million and counting, he’s earned the respect of the entire racing industry with his superior horsemanship and the classy manner with which he handles himself.
Thoroughbred race lovers, the horse racing community and those who love to see and be seen, had the opportunity to rub elbows with celebrities, television and film personalities, as well as the industry’s top horse owners, trainers and jockeys in a week-long celebration. The biggest race day of the year in South Florida is the Curlin Florida Derby, a showcase of the world’s best horses and jockeys, all competing for the coveted title of Florida Derby Winner. On March 27th, there were 14 races, featuring 10 Premium Stake Races.
Excitement was palpable as the entertainment and thrill of the races were delivered with the same level of friendly service and safety protocols guests have come to expect from Gulfstream Park. As our State of Florida has started to re-open with health and safety measures in place, Gulfstream Park’s tenure in this business and deep operating experience provided expertise in safely managing public gatherings.
