SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER ROBERTO J. ALONSO ELECTED SECRETARY/TREASURER FOR THE GREATER FLORIDA CONSORTIUM OF SCHOOL BOARDS (GFCSB)

At the Spring meeting of the Greater Florida Consortium of School Boards (GFCSB), held in Tampa, on  June 6, 2024, School Board Member Roberto J. Alonso, District 4, was elected unanimously to the  position of Secretary/Treasurer for the organization. The GFCSB includes Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm  Beach, Monroe, Collier, Charlotte, Pinellas, Manatee, Brevard, and St. Lucie school districts. This  organization represents the interests of nearly 50 percent of the public school students in the state of  Florida. Each year the GFCSB develops and adopts a consensus legislative platform and advocates  those positions in Tallahassee.

“I would like to thank my colleagues on the GFCSB for entrusting me with this position. It is an honor for  me to serve as Secretary/Treasurer for this important organization that represents the interests of so  many students, teachers, and families in Florida,” said School Board Member Alonso. “I look forward to  working together for the benefit of public education in our state.”

Additionally, from June 5 – 7, 2024, School Board Member Alonso joined over 375 school board  members, superintendents, and education leaders during the FSBA/FADSS Annual Summer  Conference in Tampa, Florida, for three days of leadership development, networking, and training. The  theme of the conference, Unleashing Your Superpowers, featured Gregory Offner, Author, Workforce  Strategist, and Award-winning Keynote Speaker.

The conference also included an important panel discussion, Decades of Dedication: Insights and  Wisdom from our Veteran School Board Superheroes. This session featured an impressive panel of  veteran school board members, each with over two decades of experience. They shared their  invaluable insights, reflecting on past experiences, and discussed current challenges facing Florida’s  school boards. Panelists included Andy Griffiths (Monroe), Patty Hightower (Escambia), Bev Slough  (St. Johns), and Jerry Taylor (Suwannee.)

The event also featured a legislative session review and legislator Q&A with Representative Alex Rizo,  Representative Susan Valdés, and Senator Travis Hutson. The conversation during this session was  moderated by Dr. Danielle Thomas, FSBA Director of Advocacy & Legislative Services, and focused on  the biggest education topics coming out of the 2024 Legislative Session including deregulation and  other impactful legislation.
